Havre speech students do well in Glasgow

Press release

Havre High School speech and debate took a small team to its first tournament of the year, Saturday in Glasgow, and saw some success.

With good finishes by its competitors, Havre just missed bringing home the Class A sweepstakes trophy. Havre took second with 34 points and Sidney took first with 39.

“This was a good first tournament for the students who were able to come and compete,” head coach Tim Leeds said. “There was some tough competition in Glasgow, including from the host. Sidney always is a strong Class A team, and Shepherd has been a Class B powerhouse for decades, with strong teams there from Malta and Wolf Point and other eastern B and C schools, too.”

Fourth-year Lincoln-Douglas debater Paige Bertelsen, a senior, went 2-1 in a round-robin with Sidney and Shepherd debaters and just missed first place by one speaker poin. Bertelsen ended up in second at Glasgow.

Second-year public forum debaters Caitlyn “Corb” Ehrin, a senior, and Carinna Kline, a sophomore, also did a round-robin style competition against Shepherd debaters and also ended in second place.

In impromptu speaking, both of Havre’s competitors did well in preliminary rounds and broke into finals.

Sophomore Sienna Dennis, competing in her second year for Havre, ended up in third place, and freshman Paige Anderson, competing at her first-ever tournament, took third.

Havre travels to Billings this weekend for the Billings Central High School invitational, being hosted at the new school in Lockwood.

“This should be a good tournament,” Leeds said. “I am expecting some tough competition there, and we are bringing a full team this time, so this will be a great experience for our team.”
