The Havre High volleyball just keeps rolling as it finished its home schedule with a pair of wins this past weekend. At Havre High Gymnasium, the Blue Ponies defeated Browning in three sets (25-9, 25-12, 25-16) Friday night before turning around Saturday to defeat Sidney in three sets (25-14, 25-8, 25-12).
“I thought the girls did a good job. They played pretty focused volleyball and executed really well,” HHS head coach Stephanie Huse said about the weekend. “We just did everything that we wanted them to do to finish their time here this season so I was pleased with how they did.”
The Ponies started the weekend strong with their win over Browning Friday. The Ponies dominated the first set to win 25-9. Browning played better in the next two sets, but the Ponies still won those contests by scores of 25-12 and 25-16 to sweep the match. Avery Carlson led the Ponies with nine kills while recording eight digs. Molly Huse had a strong start to the weekend with 23 assists, three service aces and a block against Browning.
Before their match against Sidney Saturday, the Ponies honored their seniors for senior night. This season’s senior class consisted of Carlson, Huse, Yelena Miller and Lizzi Haney, who have had great careers for the Ponies.
“All of our seniors one way or another participated on the varsity level since their sophomore year. Their record is 31-5 in their time on varsity which is a really big accomplishment,” coach Huse said. “The impact they’ve had on our program and the wonderful things they’ve done is what I take away from this weekend.”
With it being their senior night, it was the last time these seniors would play volleyball at HHS Gymnasium. While emotions were surely high, seniors such as Haney were more excited that it is a sign the postseason is coming.
“We’re all excited to be at the end of our season. We’re really not done yet but it’s kind of a grand finale,” Haney said. “We get to enjoy it with our teammates and just soak it all in.”
Against Sidney, Kyanna Jarvis led the Ponies with 10 kills. In her final match at home, Carlson recorded 16 digs and six kills. Miller also played well with three blocks, nine digs, six kills and three service aces. Molly Huse posted a stat line of 31 assists, three service aces and nine digs and Haney recorded two service aces.
After Sidney scored the opening point of the first set, the Ponies took control with six straight points to take the lead. Over the next few minutes, the Ponies and Eagles exchanged points until Havre only had a 14-10 lead.
The Ponies then showed why they are undefeated this season as they scored six straight points to stretch their lead to 20-10. The Eagles tried to slow them down, but the Ponies went on to win the set, 25-14, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Ponies carried their momentum into the beginning of the second set. They started the set by jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Even after the Eagles scored, the Ponies scored another three straight points to make it 10-1. With runs like this, it is not surprising that the Ponies are undefeated so far this fall.
“It’s all mindset when we go on those runs,” Haney said. “We just want to get a lot of points and a lot of times it’s an increment. First to five, first to 10 and first all the way to 25.”
After two points by Sidney, the Ponies went on another big run with seven straight points to stretch the lead to 17-3. The Eagles tried to salvage the set, but the Ponies’ advantage allowed them to coast to a 25-8 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set started more competitively with Sidney taking an early 3-2 lead. But again, the Ponies got on a roll with a 10-0 run to take a quick 12-3 lead. The Eagles finally scored in response, but the Ponies continued to roll as they further stretched the lead to 24-9. With their backs against the wall, the Eagles scored three straight points to extend the set. But the Ponies finally scored to win the set, 25-12, to take the match in three sets.
The Ponies remain perfect on the season with a 12-0 record and a 9-0 mark in Northeast A competition. The Ponies have another pair of matches this weekend on the road before beginning the postseason with divisionals in Sidney the following week. With the way the Ponies have been playing this fall, they should feel confident heading into the final weeks of the season.
“We’re really excited. It’s really nice to go undefeated all this way,” Haney said. “Teams want to beat us but we’re ready and next week will be tough. We want to get those wins in order to go into divisionals with a good seed and take divisionals and then all the way to state.”
The HHS volleyball team will next play Livingston on the road this Friday at 7 p.m.
