Northern wrestling Maroon-Gold Dual set for tonight, Northern cross country canceled

After holding its alumni dual this past weekend, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will continue to get ready for the upcoming season with the Maroon-Gold Dual tonight at 7 p.m. at Armory Gymnasium.

The Maroon-Gold Dual will determine the starting lineup for the Lights this season. Throughout the night, wrestlers at the same weight class will compete one another to see who will be the primary wrestler for the Lights in that weight class this year.

Some wrestlers for the Lights have already gotten some time on the mat this fall competing in the alumni dual last weekend, so they hope to use those matches as a warmup for tonight.

Freshman Leo Anderson should get a shot tonight as he wrestles in the 125-pound weight class. Brennon McDermott should also compete for a starting spot in the lineup as he wrestles at 133 pounds for the Lights.

At 184 pounds, freshman Reece White will wrestle for a spot in the starting lineup. After winning in the alumni dual last weekend, freshman Cade Gubler will wrestle at 174 pounds tonight. Other wrestlers who should compete tonight include Cooper Cook at 133 pounds and freshman Gavin McLean at 157 pounds. Tanner Cook may also get a shot tonight wrestling at 125 pounds.

Many returning wrestlers for the Lights will look to once again cement themselves as starters in the lineup. Colin Silverthorn will compete to be the Lights' wrestler at 141 pounds this season. Martin Wilkie is coming off a strong year for the Lights so he will look to win the starting spot once again at 149 pounds.

Other wrestlers who should compete tonight include freshman Zach Valdez at 165 pounds, Carl Hansen at 184 pounds, Devin Crawford at 165 pounds, Josh Walker at 197 pounds, Connor Harris at 149 pounds and Rylan Moldenhauer at 197 pounds.

While the MSU-N wrestling team is gearing up for its season, the MSU-N cross country teams are in the middle of their seasons. However, their cross country meet that was scheduled at home for this Friday has now been canceled. The Lights and Skylights are now scheduled to next compete in the Frontier Conference Championships in Helena on Nov. 4.
