Hi-Line Football Roundup: CJI and Fort Benton dominate, Chinook stumbles

With the regular season nearing its end, high school football teams on the Hi-Line will be looking to play hard in order to get ready for the postseason. If this past Saturday’s 70-18 win over Harlowton is any indication, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness six-man football team is more than ready for postseason football.

The Hawks started the game strong with a nine-yard touchdown run from Nate Nelson to take the lead. The Engineers responded when Gabe Dill threw a two-yard score to Angus Glennie, but the rest of the opening quarter belonged to the Hawks.

Braden Mattson added onto the lead with a 52-yard touchdown for the Hawks. Later in the quarter, Nelson scored another again with a 45-yard run. Mattson then got it going through the air as he threw a 16-yard score to Blake Harmon. Nelson capped off the quarter with another nine-yard touchdown run to give CJI a 36-6 lead.

To start the second quarter, Dill had a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 36-12. But the Hawks continued to roll. Mattson threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Harmon to add onto the lead. Adam Grammar then had a 43-yard touchdown run for the Hawks. Mattson then made a play on defense with an interception return for a touchdown to give CJI a 57-12 lead at halftime.

With the big lead, the Hawks cruised to the easy victory. It was another strong day on offense as the Hawks had 252 total yards, with 228 yards coming on the ground. Mattson finished the game going 2-for-2 through the air for 24 yards and two scores. He also had 52 rushing yards and a touchdown on two attempts.

Nelson had another excellent day on the ground as he ran for 73 yards and three touchdowns on five carries. But it was Grammar who led the team with 100 rushing yards on five carries in the game.

The CJI defense also had a performance to be proud of as the Hawks limited the Engineers to only 116 total yards of offense. As a defense, the Hawks recorded two interceptions and recovered three fumbles for five total takeaways in the game.

With the win, the Hawks finish the regular season with a 6-2 record. With that record, the Hawks should find themselves in the postseason competing for a state championship this fall.
