Havre High Marching Band wins outstanding performance award

The Havre High School marching band and flag team won an award for outstanding performance at the Montana State University Showcase of Bands over the weekend.

The competition included bands from Class A schools Fergus and Park high schools and AA schools Gallatin High School, Bozeman High School, Flathead High School and Belgrade High School. Outstanding performance was the only award given out at the event.

HHS Marching Band Director Cullen Hinkle said it was great to be able to show off their skills with other like-minded bands, and he's happy they were able to put on a performance that everyone enjoyed.

Hinkle said it wasn't a huge competition and the band mostly saw it as an opportunity to get their nerves out before going to a much bigger competition in Pocatello, Idaho, in two weeks along with bands and flag teams from that state, Utah and Montana.

"We're feeling pretty good," he said. "We definitely have some issues we need to work out, but that comes with the territory."

He said this weekend's event was fairly new and will likely become a more coveted award when more schools start going.

He also said he wanted to thank the community for their support when they go to events like this.

"It's been a really great experience for us," Hinkle said.
