Havre volleyball stays undefeated with road win over Lewistown

The Havre High volleyball team has been chugging along nicely this season and this past Saturday was no different. While the Blue Ponies did face some early adversity on the road against Lewistown, they went on to win the match in four sets (23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-12). On the road, HHS head coach Stephanie Huse liked how all her players contributed to the win.

“I was really pleased with how the girls played overall as a team. It was a real team effort,” Huse said. “Everybody contributed. Everybody was a big factor in why we were able to come out of Fergus with a win.”

Kyanna Jarvis had a strong match as she led the team with 17 kills and four service aces. Avery Carlson also played well with 14 kills, two service aces and 12 digs. Emilee Chambliss made an impact with 11 kills and two blocks in the contest.

Along with 40 assists in the match, Molly Huse recorded 12 digs and two blocks against the Golden Eagles. Lizzi Haney had a strong match as well with 18 digs and a service ace.

But the match did not start on the right foot for the Ponies. The Ponies and Eagles went back and forth to start the first set. After fighting to a 12-12 tie, the Eagles took the lead with a 4-0 run. The run also gave the Eagles momentum as they continued to play well to stretch the lead to 22-17.

“We were just kind of tight when we started the match and that’s not uncommon when you go on the road and you’re not in your gym,” Stephanie Huse said about the first set. “That first set can be a little bit of a challenge to find your rhythm and I think we were a little tight or maybe a little too much adrenaline was pumping right off the beginning so we needed to settle in.”

The Ponies did not give up as they fought their way back to tie the set 23-23. But the Eagles scored two straight points to win the set, 25-23, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Ponies were able to carry their momentum from late in the first set into the beginning of the second set. The Ponies came out of the gates swinging as they jumped out to a 13-3 lead. The Eagles were never able to recover as the Ponies pulled away to win the set, 25-12, to tie the match 1-1.

“Credit to the girls because after that first set, they really weren’t pleased with how they played,” Huse said. “They were really determined to come out and show who they were and play the volleyball that they can play.”

The Ponies carried their momentum through the rest of the match. The Eagles played better in the third set, but the Ponies continued to play well to win the third set, 25-17, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Ponies then took care of business in the fourth set to win, 25-12, to close out the match.

“Our ball control and execution on offense just got more and more confident and the girls just did a really good job of being the aggressor and bringing the energy that we need to be successful,” Huse said about the last three sets of the match. “The energy just shifted to our side and we were just able to hold on to it throughout the rest of the match.”

The Ponies are now 6-0 on the season with a 4-0 record in the Northeast A. Like many other teams, the Ponies have hopes of a deep postseason run later in the fall. About a month in the season so far, Huse likes how the Ponies are progressing to where they want to be come postseason.

“I think we’re right where we need to be. I think the girls are doing a really good job of understanding everybody’s role when we’re playing,” Huse said. “They know what they need to be doing to be successful so they’re right where they need to be but there’s definitely room for improvement.”

The HHS volleyball team will next play against Lewistown, this time at home at Havre High Gymnasium this Thursday at 7 p.m.
