More heat coming, advisory in place this week

While most of Montana isn’t seeing the scorching temperatures hitting places like Texas, Georgia, Florida, and states on the West Coast, high temperatures have been hitting here and more look to be on the way.

In this part of north-central Montana, the National Weather Service recording station at the Havre City-County Airport recorded 100 degrees Friday, just short of the record of 102 set in 1936 and 1999 and more than 10 degrees warmer than the normal high for July 29, 89 degrees.

The temperature at the airport only hit 92 degrees Saturday, but Weather Service reported at 5 p.m. Sunday hitting 97 degrees, the latest time available before printing deadline.

And high temperatures predicted for today have led to the heat advisory and a red flag warning, a major issue as the heat makes firefighting on fires already burning in Montana and elsewhere even more difficult.

The forecast for Havre today, as of Sunday evening, was 100 degrees, leading to the heat advisory in effect for this area from noon Monday through early Tuesday morning.

Weather Service said in the advisory that people could see record hot temperatures between 95 degrees and 105 degrees at lower elevations, with low temperatures only briefly falling to near 60 degrees.

The temperatures could cause heat-related illnesses, the advisory said, and people should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

It is never safe to leave a toddler, adult with a disability or a pet in parked vehicles, the advisory warned.

The highs for Tuesday are expected to be a bit cooler for much of this region — upper 80s to low 90s — but climb back into the upper 90s again later in the week.

A slight chance of showers is predicted for this region from Thursday night through Saturday, although the highs are expected to stay in the 90s Friday before cooling a bit Saturday.
