The college basketball season is still a ways off, but when it comes, the Montana State University-Northern Lights will be ready. And the Northern men will have an exciting schedule, both inside the Armory Gymnasium, and away from Havre.
Northern head coach Shawn Huse recently released the main portion of MSU-N's 2022-23 schedule, which includes four home games to start thew regular season, as well as a non-conference trips to Washington and Arizona, and two big games in Helena.
"Once again we have a good variety of teams and game sites slated for next year, in terms of our schedule and how it looks to-date," Huse said. "With the graduation of two big playmakers, I like how next year's competition is laid out. We need quality game experience as our 2022-23 mixed group of seasoned returners and quality newcomers gradually progress and gel. Our non-conference contests will be good challenges for us as we move into the always-tough Frontier Conference. I feel like this schedule meets that need for us."
The Lights open the season with King's University Oct. 27, then remain home for a pair of games against Northwest Indian College to start November. MSU-N also hosts Augustana University-Alberta Nov. 10. Northern's first road trip will be against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University Nov. 19-20 in Tacoma, before the Lights return from Thanksgiving break for their December Frontier Conference opener against Providence Dec. 1 in Great Falls. MSU-N then plays arch rival Carroll College Dec. 3 in the Armory.
The remainder of December will be a return to non-conference games, with MSU-N in Helena Dec. 9-10 for games against Cascade Conference powers Bushnell and Corban, followed by a trip to Phoenix for the Cactus Classic. In Arizona, the Lights will play Hope University, Vanguard University and The Masters, three perennial NAIA powerhouses.
MSU-N will then close out non-conference play with Dec. 29-30 games against Keyano University and St. Mary's University in the Armory.
From there, Northern begins full-time league play. The Frontier Conference will play Thursday-Saturday games again this season.
January starts with the Lights facing Rocky Mountain College Jan. 5 and Montana Western Jan. 7 at home. Northern then plays four straight on the road, starting at Montana Tech Jan. 12 and Carroll Jan. 14. The Lights the4n travel to Providence Jan. 19 and RMC Jan. 21. Following the four-game road trip, Northern plays four straight at home, starting with Western Jan. 26 and Tech Jan. 28. February begins with the Light staking on Carroll Jan. 2 and UP Jan. 4 in the Armory, beef heading to RMC Feb. 9 and Western Feb. 11. The Lights then wrap up the regular season with Montana Tech Feb. 16 in the Armory.
The Frontier playoffs will run Feb, 21-28 at home sites around the league.
"Although it is mid-summer right now, we will be on the court once again before we know it – I like that the guys can look at this and start thinking a little earlier than usual about game dates, and about the opposition they are preparing for in their off-season workouts," Huse said.
The Lights begin the 2022-23 season with a home game against King's University from Edmonton, Alberta Oct. 27.
