Tahlyn Olson is hard work at the Havre High volleyball camp this summer
While it is the middle of summer, that does not mean the athletes on the Hi-Line have not been busy. At the Havre High School Gymnasium this week, volleyball players from the area participated in a volleyball camp. One of those players was eighth grader Tahlyn Olson, who went to the camp with one goal in mind.
"I just wanted to come here and get better," Olson said.
Olson comes from a volleyball family, so the sport is not unfamiliar to her. She grew up watching her two older sisters play the game. One of her sisters is also a coach on the Havre High volleyball team.
Looking to live up to her family legacy, Olson has been hard at work on her game. At the volleyball camp, Olson has participated in drills focusing on her passing and setting. She also learned how to pass and position herself better on the court. But she has also enjoyed the camp for spending time with her friends.
"(I've enjoyed) seeing my friends since I haven't seen them all summer," Olson said.
If you are an aspiring volleyball player on the Hi-Line, the HHS volleyball players should have your attention. This past fall, the HHS volleyball team finished second at state to bring home a trophy for the Blue Ponies. So when she finds her way to that program, Olson hopes to help the Ponies carry on that success.
Like many athletes on the Hi-Line, Olson participates in sports throughout the year. Along with volleyball, Olson also plays basketball, soccer and softball. She enjoys playing all those sports but basketball might be her favorite. When she is not playing sports, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.
This week, Olson has been working on her game at the HHS volleyball camp. During her work, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask her five questions.
HDN: Do you have a favorite volleyball memory?
Olson: "We got to the championship this year. We lost sadly but that was pretty fun."
HDN: At this camp, how does it feel to work with the high school players?
Olson: "It's very exciting. I see them every morning at the open gym so it's nice to see them again."
HDN: What do you look forward to about eventually playing high school volleyball?
Olson: "Just the teams and hopefully getting to see my sister more and play with her."
HDN: What are your strengths as a player?
Olson: "I'm very aggressive getting to the ball and I talk a lot to my team."
HDN: What do you need to improve at?
Olson: "Hitting is my weakness. I would like to get better at hitting."
