Bullhook Blossoms celebrates Garden Week

Press release

Did you know that a local garden club designated the nasturtium as the official Havre city flower one hundred years ago?

Garden clubs in Havre have had a rich tradition and history since 1922.

The current club, Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club, reorganized in 2009 under the leadership of Toni Hagener and selected the name from a past club originating in 1942. The name comes from the mountain or butte east of Havre and the creek that meanders through the city.

The club is affiliated with the State and National Federation of Garden Clubs and is celebrating Garden Week June 5-11 that concludes with the state meeting in Missoula June 10 and 11. Seven local members will be attending.

National Garden Week was first celebrated nationwide in 1923 when Alma Higgins and fellow gardeners in Butte persuaded President Warren Harding to sign a proclamation.

Bullhook Bottoms Garden Club's objectives are to have educational and informative monthly programs and promote projects to beautify or enhance civic and community projects. Recently, the club donated $500 to the improvement project for the Beaver Lodge at Beaver Creek Park's Camp Kiwanis. Other ongoing civic projects include flowers at the local library, maintaining the Hill County Courthouse peonies and Iris Memorial Garden in Highland Park, Adopt-a-Park at the Bakke Memorial Park, Festival Days float, Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line Christmas Tree, assisting artists with Art in the Garden, Blue Star Markers honoring veterans, featured yards during the summer, Arbor Day tree planting and the Toni Hagener Memorial at Montana State University-Northern.

This summer, we will be planting a memorial tree in honor of former member Minnie McCann. The club sponsors a Junior Club at the Boys & Girls Club and assists with their gardening program.

The Blossoms meets the fourth Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Timmons Room in the lower level of the Hill County Courthouse January through October. New members are always welcome. For more information, people can contact President Chery Kuka at 406-262-4227.
