Havre Trails hosting Mount Centennial hike

Staff and wire report

Havre Trails has invited people to a hike up Centennial Mountain on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation Saturday, June 11.

"It is a gorgeous view at the summit and a moderate to difficult 4.6 mile round trip hike up a two-track road switchbacking up the mountain," a Havre Trails release said.

Meeting time/place for Havre residents: 8:30 a.m. at the District 4 Human Resources Development Council parking lot in Havre, 2229 Fifth Ave. Hikers will caravan out to the trailhead, a roughly 35-minute drive one way.

Meeting time/place for Rocky Boy residents: 9:15 a.m. at the Old Stone Child College parking lot at Rocky Boy Agency.

Hike length: Approximately 4.6 miles round-trip, out and back, 3 hours.

Terrain difficulty: Moderate to difficult - some fairly steep areas; some areas with loose footing; very sun-exposed.

Elevation: 1250 feet

Hike leader: Sammie Chagnon, 803-640-2607.

Notes: Dogs allowed on a leash, and hikers must bring waste bags.

This mountain has very little shade. Hikers should remember to bring sunscreen, hats, glasses, lunch/snacks for the summit and more water than they think they'll need - 40 ounces per person at a minimum.

Rocky Boy group hike events are approved by the Chippewa Cree Tribal Council/Natural Resources Department, who have generously granted Havre Trails a group hiking permit. People may hike with Havre Trails under this permit, but individuals who want to return to hike on their own on reservation land and are not enrolled tribal members must purchase a recreation permit. Call Lucilla at 406-395-4207 for a permit.
