Havre track begins postseason with Eastern A Divisionals

After a spring full of hard work, the Havre High track and field teams finally began the postseason with the Eastern A Divisionals in Lockwood this past weekend. As they tried to qualify for the state meet this weekend, several Blue Ponies performed well. At the end of the weekend, the efforts of the Ponies resulted in the HHS girls team finishing fourth and the HHS boys finishing seventh.

"We performed awesomely. Almost everyone either got a season best or a personal record so even the ones that didn't make it to state ended out really well," HHS head coach Kari Filius said. "We did really well and I was really pleased with all of them."

The HHS girls team scored 61 points to finish fourth in its meet. Laurel scored 171.33 points to finish first in the meet while Lewistown came in second and Hardin came in third.

As she had done all season long, Kaydance Reiter ran well for the Ponies as she took first in both the 100-meter sprint and the 200-meter sprint. She posted a personal record of 12.80 in the 100 and she posted a personal best of 26.71 in the 200.

"She had a great weekend," Filius said. "She was phenomenal, she really did well and she was very confident."

Kyanna Jarvis had a strong showing at divisionals as she placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.66. She also placed third in the high jump with a height of 5-00. Her teammate Macee May did well in the triple jump as she took third with a personal record of 34-00.5.

Sadie Filius had a strong meet in the hurdles. She finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a season record of 50.80 and she took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a season record of 17.52.

Hailey Gingery continued her strong season in the long-distance runs for the Ponies. She finished sixth in the 800 with a personal record of 2:28.00 and she took sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:40.44.

As they have done all season, the girls did well in the relay events. In the 1,600 relay, Filius, Gingery, Jarvis and Reiter led Havre to a second-place finish with a time of 4:18.76. In the 400 relay, the team of Reiter, May, Filius and Jarvis finished third with a time of 52.67.

Many other Ponies from the girls team qualified for state over the weekend. Emma Gillen finished eighth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.59. In the javelin, Clara Laird finished eighth with a distance of 94-08. In the pole vault, Taylor Leeds took seventh with a personal record of 8-00.

The HHS boys team finished seventh in its meet with 39 points. Laurel also won the boys meet with 150 points and Glendive came in second and Livingston took third.

Caleb Tomac placed high in several running events. He finished first in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 at divisionals. He recorded a personal record of 4:33.06 in the 1,600 and he posted a personal best of 10:05.28 in the 3,200. He also did well in the 800 as he finished sixth with a personal record of 2:03.54.

"We just had a plan and he stuck to the plan," Kari Filius said about Tomac's performance. "He just had great races and did a great job."

Some Ponies finished high in the field events. In the pole vault, Riley Pleninger finished fourth with a personal record of 12-06. Kale VanCampen did well in the triple jump with a personal best of 41-06.5.

The boys also did well in the relays. In the 1,600 relay, Pleninger, Trayden Riley, Tate Nelson and Shane Patascil led Havre to second place with a time of 3:35.84. In the 400 relay, the team of Patascil, Brisbin Reiter, Carson Harris and Brayden Kimberling took fourth with a time of 45.84.

Several other athletes qualified for state on the HHS boys team. Kimberling took eighth in the 100 with a time of 11.49 and Riley took eighth in the 400 with a personal record of 54.20. In the triple jump, Orion Thivierge finished seventh with a personal record of 41-00.25.

While she is happy with how several of her athletes performed at divisionals, FIlius knows the work is not done yet. With the state meet coming up to end the season, Filius wants to see her team approach this upcoming meet the same way they did this past weekend.

"If we just go into the state track meet with the confidence to perform and compete as best we can like we did at divisionals, I'm going to be happy," Filius said. "I'm looking for good things and the kids are really excited. They've had a great season and they're still excited to do more."

The HHS track and field teams will wrap up the season with the Class AA-A State Meet in Butte this weekend.
