They may not have lived here for some time now, but they’re still two of the very best golfers to ever come out of Havre, or the Hi-Line. And former Blue Pony greats Nick Obie and Jason Johnstone are still at it.
Last week, the duo, who helped Havre High win Class A state championships once upon a time, played in the USGA Amateur Four Ball Championships at the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama.
The duo competed in a qualifier for the event earlier last month in Las Vegas, and were one of 125 teams to reach the two-man competition, which runs through today. The duo didn’t advance out of the stroke play portion of the event, still, reaching the tournament was an exciting accomplishment as USGA events represent the very best-of-the-best in amateur golf.
So congrats to Nick and Jason who are not only still swinging the wrenches at a high level, but all these years later, are still making Havre golf pond.
Speaking of Havre golf, leagues continued last week. Men’s league at Prairie Farms Golf Course last Tuesday saw Prairie Farms earn high team with 21.5 points. The squad was composed of Greg Baltrusch, Chuck Wimmer, Dan Wagner and Mike Peterson. Jeremy Jensen was low gross with a 2-under par 34, while Rob Myers was low net at 31.
Last Wednesday night saw Independence Bank earn high team with 21 points. Dennis Murphy, Matt Wertheimer, Gene Harada and Byron Ophus composed the team. Jordy Donoven also shot a 2-under 34 for low gross, while low net went to Ophus with a 31.5.
Women’s league was postponed last Thursday night at Prairie Farms, while league at BCGC did try to go on.
BCGC also recently announced its tournament schedule, starting with the Big Sandy Swim Team Tournament May 28. The Chester Swim Team Tournament is June 4, followed by HEDA June 11 and the HWC Tournament June 18.
