A crowd of impressive Montana State University-Northern figures joined others to honor Joe Callahan and Clyde Thomas, a long-lasting supporter of Northern, at their Northern Founders Excellence Awards banquet Friday in Northern's Student Union Building Ballroom.

The event saw 14 previous Excellence Award-winners join Thomas and Callahan, who came out of retirement to serve as interim chancellor while a chancellor search was underway, along with Chancellor Greg Kegel, who was hired in that search, former Chancellor Alex Capdeville, who retired in 2007, and former Interim Chancellor Rolf Groseth, who served while the search for Capdeville's successor was held and who retired as chancellor of Montana State University Billings.

Callahan, who served in a variety of administrative appointments starting in 1973 and ended his career there with his retirement as interim chancellor in January 2012, was nominated by former provost Roger Barber.

Thomas, a Northern alumn who owns Western Trailer and Marine and has supported the institution and has been involved with activities on campus for years, was nominated by Northern Skylight head basketball coach and assistant athletic director Chris Mouat.
