Havre High track teams take first at Whitewater Invitational in Malta

The Havre High track and field teams finally made their return after a week of inclement weather postponed their last scheduled meet. On Thursday in Malta, the Blue Ponies competed in the Whitewater Invitational where both the HHS boys and girls teams took first.

The Ponies were originally supposed to compete in the Laurel/Park City Invite Saturday and the Whitewater Invitational was only meant for junior varsity. But after the meet in Laurel was canceled, the varsity teams competed in Malta. It was a cold and windy day in Malta, so HHS head coach Kari Filius was even more impressed by how her teams performed.

“We did a really good job of competing at that meet,” Filius said. “I was really proud of them and I was really happy that everybody got a competition since Saturday was canceled.”

The HHS boys team took first with 168 points while Malta took second and Lustre Christian took third. The HHS girls team took first with 172 points with Malta in second and Whitewater in third.

Many Ponies had strong finishes Thursday. Kaydance Reiter took first in the 100-meter sprint and the 200-meter sprint. She recorded a time of 13.43 in the 100 and a time of 27.94 in the 200. She also placed fourth in the high jump with a distance of 4-04. Reiter has been having a great season for the Ponies so far, made even more impressive by the fact she is only a freshman.

“She’s having a great season. She’s just a natural sprinter and she really loves the challenge,” Filius said about Reiter. “It seems like every meet she’s just excited to see what she can do.”

Hailey Gingery took first in the 800 with a time of 2:52.25 and she took third in the 1,600 with a finish of 6:34.48. Kyanna Jarvis took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.98 and she finished second in the high jump with a distance of 4-08. Sadie Filius placed first in the 300-meter hurdles with a finish of 56.86 and she took third in the long jump with a distance of 14-03.25. Mallory Murray had a strong day as she took second in the pole vault with a distance of 6-00.

Macee May performed well in several events Thursday. She placed second in the long jump with a distance of 14-09 and third in the 100 with a time of 13.79. She also placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 27-10. Emily Gulbertson took fifth in the 800 with a time of 3:28.18 and sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 7:55.91.

Koryn Bedwell took fourth in the 200 with a time of 30.73 and she placed sixth in the 100 with a finish of 14.34. Chloe Shennum placed third in the 800 with a time of 3:23.39 and she took fourth in the 400 with a finish of 1:16.26. Jayla Meldrum took third in the 3,200 with a time of 14:54.05 and fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 7:06.57. Emma Gillen placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.51 and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.61.

Several other Ponies did well Thursday. Emily Leeds placed fourth in the 100 with a time of 14.15 and Shyla Solomon took fourth in the pole vault with a height of 5-06. Saige Knutsen placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 5-00. Clara Laird placed fifth in the discus with a distance of 78-07. Tierra Parker finished sixth in the high jump with a height of 4-02 and Maggie Daniels took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 28-02.5.

The HHS girls relay teams won both the 400 relay and 1,600 relay events in Malta. The 400 relay team consisting of Reiter, May, Filius and Jarvis took first with a time of 56.74. The 1,600 relay team of Filius, Jarvis, Gingery and Carolyn Thomas placed first with a finish of 4:57.03.

Many Ponies on the boys team had strong performances to lead them to first in Malta. Brayden Kimberling took first in both the 100 and the 200. He recorded a time of 11.67 in the 100 and he finished with a time of 24.34 in the 200. Caleb Tomac placed first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:00.67 and he took first in the 800 with a time of 2:24.21. Brody Henry also ran well Thursday as he took first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:46.15. He also placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:24.66.

“My distance runners did well,” Kari Filius said. “The wind was terrible so to go around the track eight, four, two times and be able to gut it out, they had really good performances.”

Ryker O’Leary took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.08 and he placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-01.75. Kale VanCampen took first in the triple jump with a distance of 35-09 and he placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 18-05.5. Zachary Monk placed first for the Ponies in the javelin with a distance of 138-07. Jacob Herring placed first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.76.

Ciaran Courtnage took second in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. He recorded a time of 20.39 in the 100 hurdles and he posted a time of 55.41 in the 300 hurdles. In the triple jump, Tate Nelson took second with a distance of 34-00. Shane Patascil also ran well in several events as he recorded a time of 11.99 in the 100 to take fourth and he posted a time of 25.77 to take fourth in the 200. He also took third in the high jump with a height of 5-06.

Jasper Carlson placed third in the 200 with a time of 24.98 while Brisbin Reiter took fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.58. In the 100, Jasper Wendland took sixth in the 100 with a time of 12.34. Justin Awtrey took fourth in the 400 with a finish of 1:06.41 and Ezra Goldhahn placed sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:43.40.

Evan Baker placed sixth for the Ponies in the triple jump with a distance of 31-05. The HHS boys relay team of Awtrey, Henry, Tomac and Jason Wold took first in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:20.54.

Because of weather causing several meets to be either postponed or canceled, the Whitewater Invitational was only the third meet the Ponies have competed in this spring. As the Ponies settle into the season, Filius believes this most recent meet will help them build toward their goal.

“It just gave them confidence. That they could work hard no matter what the circumstances were and perform well,” Filius said. “They’re coming together as a group and they just all want to improve and do well.”

The HHS track teams will next compete Tuesday at the Cal Wearley Memorial at the Havre Middle School Track.
