Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Allison Powell, Chinook tennis

Chinook's Allison Powell seeks to finish tennis career on a strong note

The past week of weather has made it impossible for high school athletes on the Hi-Line to compete. But as the weather improves, athletes such as Chinook tennis player Allison Powell can finally get back on the court. She looks to continue her senior season for the Sugarbeeters, a season that she has enjoyed because she gets to play with a larger team than previous seasons.

"I've enjoyed there being so many of us so that's been kind of nice," Powell said. "There's usually not very many but now there is so there's more of a team aspect to it."

Powell has been a tennis player throughout her high school career. Her friend got her into the sport during her freshman year and even after her friend graduated, Powell kept with the sport.

"She was a great tennis player," Powell said about her friend who got her into tennis. "I thought I should do it and she said I was going to be good at it."

At Chinook, Powell also plays volleyball and basketball for the Sugarbeeters. This past winter, she helped the Chinook Sugarbeeters finish second in the District 9C tournament and qualify for the Northern C Divisional. At divisionals, the Sugarbeeters won a game over Cascade in an elimination game.

Outside of sports, Powell spends most of her free time with her family on their ranch. Once high school is done, she plans on attending Montana State University Billings to major in accounting. But with about a month left of her high school career, Powell has one thing on her mind.

"I hope to keep improving every meet and make it to state," Powell said.

Powell will try to achieve that goal as she and the Sugarbeeters compete over the last few weeks of the season. Before she returns to the court, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask her five questions.

HDN: What do you love the most about tennis?

Powell: "The individuality of the sport is great because the other sports I play are both teams and it's nice to know where you're at as an individual."

HDN: What is the hardest part about tennis?

Powell: "Also being an individual. You can't rely on your teammate, you just rely on yourself."

HDN: Out of all the sports you play, which is your favorite?

Powell: "Basketball because you can be aggressive."

HDN: Over the years, what are your favorite memories involving tennis?

Powell: "Just all the bus trips we take, spending time together sitting on the grass and just hanging out and playing tennis."

HDN: What are the strengths of your game?

Powell: "The strengths of my game are how much I can move with the ball and how much I can interpret where it's going."
