Montana State University-Northern biology professor Terri Hildebrand will be leading a no-cost bird-viewing adventure Sunday in coordination with Havre Trails at the Fresno Wildlife Management Area, roughly 15 miles northwest of Kremlin.
Participants can expect a walk across the mile-long levee with a chance to see blue herons, swans, pelicans and other birds.
The initial meeting place is 10 a.m. at the MSU-Northern west parking lot — near the football field — and participants will caravan out to the site. Participants joining from other directions can meet on the Kremlin High Grade Road — County Road 275 North, 3.4 miles west of Kremlin on U.S. Highway 2 — at about 10:20 a.m. and wait for the caravan.
The hike is rated easy, with 1 to 2 miles on flat ground, and will take at least three hours, with 40 minutes of driving each way.
Attendees should dress in warm layers appropriate to the day’s weather with sturdy shoes, keeping in mind that bird droppings usually cover the levee. They should also bring snacks and plenty of water, as well as binoculars and or spotting scopes if they have them.
Organizers also remind people travel in a high-clearance vehicle because the last mile of driving can have large ruts and make sure to have plenty of gas in the tank because the round trip mileage from Havre is 70 miles.
This event is free of charge to the public, and people can preregister and access this information at https://www.havreareaevents.com/04/24/
