Havre High track teams sweep Havre Lions Invite

Despite inclement weather through the week that caused several schedule changes, the Havre High track and field teams finally got the chance to host the Havre Lions Invite this past Friday at the Havre Middle School Track. In their first home meet of the season, the Blue Ponies excelled against the competition as both the HHS boys and girls teams took first in their meets.

"I thought we performed pretty well. It was a beautiful day and most of our performances were better than last week," HHS head coach Kari Filius said. "We had some season bests and PRs for the younger kids so that was good."

The HHS boys team took first in its meet with a score of 172. Chinook came in second with 117.5 points and Chester-Joplin-Inverness took third with 82.33 points. The HHS girls team placed first in the meet with 113 points. Conrad came in second with 84 points while Saco took third with 78 points.

Many Ponies enjoyed competing at home for the first time this season. For some, it was their first time competing for the Ponies such as freshman Kaydance Reiter.

"It felt pretty good. I was pretty excited to have this home meet," Reiter said. "As a freshman, I think it was pretty nice to run on the track as a high schooler for the first time."

Earlier in the week, the Cal Wearley Memorial had to be postponed because of high winds. Thankfully, the weather had improved in time for Friday's meet as it was nice and sunny with little wind.

"I love it," Caleb Tomac said. "The weather was perfect and all the fans and family cheering just makes you run even faster."

Many Ponies had strong days at home Friday. On the boys team, Tomac placed first in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter dash. In the 800, he recorded a time of 2:09.84 and he recorded a time of 4:51.24. Brody Henry also had a strong day running for the Ponies. He took home first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:39.00 and he finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:11.51.

Shane Patascil finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.68 and he took third in the 200 with a time of 24.67. Brayden Kimberling won the 200 with a time of 23.84 and he took third with a time of 12.06. Kale VanCampen recorded a distance of 39-02 to win the triple jump.

Several other Ponies had strong finishes. Zachary Monk took second in the javelin with a distance of 143-03. Justin Awtrey finished third in the 400 with a time of 58.02 and Michael Emge finished third in the long jump with a distance of 18-06.

Jasper Wendland finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.89 and Justin Rosgaard recorded a distance of 89-06.5 in the discus to take fourth. Ethan Durward took fourth in both the 800 and the 1,600. He recorded a time of 2:29.77 in the 800 and a time of 5:27.89 in the 1,600.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Ryker O'Leary took fifth with a time of 18.94. Riley Pleninger took fifth in the pole vault with a distance of 10-00. Brisbin Reiter took sixth in the 100 with a finish of 12.39 and Ezra Goldhahn took sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 12:48.46. Ciaran Courtnage finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.20.

The HHS boys relay teams had a strong day Friday. In the 1,600 relay, the HHS team of Awtrey, Henry, Tomac and Jason Wold took first with a time of 3:54.97. In the 400 relay, the HHS team of Patascil, Kimberling, Jason Wold and Brisbin Reiter took second with a time of 46.45. An HHS team of Wendland, Monk, O'Leary and Carson Harris took third in the 400 relay with a time of 47.40.

The HHS girls team saw several performances lead them to success Friday. Kaydance Reiter took first in both the 100 and 200. She recorded a time of 13.50 in the 100 and a time of 27.63 in the 200. Hailey Gingery ran well for Havre with first-place finishes in both the 800 and the 1,600. She recorded a time of 2:40.17 in the 800 and a time of 5:48.53 in the 1,600.

Kyanna Jarvis performed well for the Ponies in multiple events. She took second in the high jump with a distance of 5-00 and she took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.01. Sadie Filius took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.82 and Jayla Meldrum took fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 14:56.10.

In the shot put, Maggie Daniels took fourth with a height of 28-00. In the pole vault, Mallory Murray took fifth with a height of 6-06 and Taylor Leeds placed sixth with a distance of 6-00. In the 400, Chloe Shennum placed sixth with a time of 1:08.72.

In the 1,600 relay, the HHS girls team of Filius, Gingery, Jarvis and Emma Gillen placed first with a time of 4:36.79. In the 400 relay, the HHS team of Filius, Jarvis, Kaydance Reiter and Macee May placed second with a time of 54.36. An HHS team of Carolyn Thomas, Amya Custer, Sophie Drew and Emily Leeds placed fourth in the 400 relay with a time of 55.83.

Friday's meet was a strong showing at home for the Ponies. But it is still early in the season, so the Ponies will still be looking to improve as they go forward with the rest of the spring.

"We can see the little technique issues that we need to get better at. Things that we need to break down with handoffs and things like that," Kari Filius said. "We just got to keep going where we're gradually getting better every track meet and hopefully by the end we'll be there."
