From Tee to Green
It’s early, so there isn’t a whole lot to report in the local golf report right now — especially with the ugly turn the weather is supposed to take over the next 10-14 days. Wind, rain, snow, more wind, and cold, cold and more cold. Welcome to spring golf in Havre.
Fortunately, The Masters doesn’t have that problem. That’s right, it’s Master’s week, which, for diehard pro golf fans, is like Christmas in April.
Of course, all eyes will be on Tiger Woods, as he possibly mounts yet another comeback, but even this Tiger fan knows how much of a long shot he will be, if indeed, he’s on the first tee Thursday morning.
Instead, I’ve got three solid picks for you golf bettors out there.
My top pick to win is Scottie Scheffler. How can you go wrong with that one? While he might not be the odds makers favorite, he’s the No. 1 player in the world, he’s playing the best of anyone in the field, and he’s played well at Augusta before. So if Scheffler, who’s 16/1 right now, doesn’t win, I’ll bet he’ll be close.
My second pick this week is Xander Schauffle. I keep picking him at just about every major, but that’s because he contends in just about every major. But he’s been really good at Augusta, and at 19/4 he’s definitely a solid choice. And even if you don’t bet Schauffle to win, take him for a Top 5 finish. That’s a really safe bet.
My final pick to win is another guy who is right on the edge — Viktor Holland. He doesn’t have a ton of Augusta experience, but he’s one of the best players in the world, his game is built for majors, and he’s one of the single best iron players on the planet right now. And precision at Augusta is a premium.
Even if you’re not a bettor, though, Master’s week is simply the best. It’s so much fun to watch, the course is legendary, and it always produces great golf drama.
As for the local golf scene, courses are open for business all over the Hi-Line, even if the weather won’t cooperate. Again, there are men’s and women’s league meetings for Prairie Farms this week.
Also, the spring high school golf season is underway. Teams from Chinook, Fort Benton, Rocky Boy and Box Elder have begun their seasons. Good luck to all our area high school golfers.
