Chinook survives Heart Butte to begin Northern C

After coming back to defeat Box Elder in the District 9C consolation game last weekend, the Chinook boys basketball team started the Northern C Divisionals with a game against Heart Butte at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls Wednesday night. The Sugarbeeters and Warriors battled throughout the night but thanks to some late free throws, Chinook pulled out the 58-55 victory to advance to the Northern C semifinals.

Toby Niederegger opened the game with a 3-pointer to give the Sugarbeeters the lead on their first possession. After a couple buckets by Heart Butte to take the lead, Brenden Fetter made a layup to give Chinook the lead. Through most of the first quarter, the Sugarbeeters and Warriors exchanged the lead. Riley Reevis knocked down some free throws to give Heart Butte an 8-7 lead with four and a half left in the opening frame.

The Sugarbeeters then found momentum with a 6-1 run to take the lead. Fetter started the run with a bucket to give Chinook the lead. Braden Eoff then knocked down a three from the corner to stretch the lead. After a Heart Butte free throw, Eoff knocked down another shot to give Chinook a 14-9 lead. But a three and another bucket from Heart Butte just tied the game again with less than two minutes remaining in the frame.

Oskar Pula and Fetter were able to score a pair of buckets to give Chinook the lead. After a Heart Butte score, Jackson Nordboe made a layup to give Chinook a 20-16 lead to end the first quarter.

The Warriors started the second quarter with a 9-2 run to retake the lead. Reevis led the Warriors with five points during this stretch, including a three to give them the lead. Joe Murray then got a score to go in to stretch the lead to 25-22.

The Sugarbeeters responded with a 10-4 run. With less than three minutes left in the half, Pula scored to give Chinook the lead again. A bucket from Fetter stretched the lead to 32-29. Some free throws cut into Chinook's lead. After Pula made another bucket, Reevis knocked down a three in the closing moments to tie the game, 34-34, heading into halftime.

After the Sugarbeeters and Warriors exchanged buckets to start the second half, Chinook went on a 7-0 run to take a 43-36 lead halfway through the third quarter. But thanks to the continued strong play from Reevis, the Warriors chipped their way back to cut the Chinook lead to 45-43 heading to the fourth.

The Warriors kept on the Sugarbeeters' heels as they tied the game, 48-48, with about five minutes left in the game. Pula got things rolling for Chinook as he made a pair of threes to give Chinook a 54-50 lead. But the Warriors again fought back to tie the game, 54-54, with less than two minutes left in the game.

With 1:39 left on the clock, Pula went to the free-throw line and made both his attempts to give Chinook the lead. In the final minute of the game, Niederegger and Pula made some free throws to give Chinook a 58-54 lead. After Thomas Young Running Crane made a free throw to cut the deficit to three points, the Warriors got the ball back with a chance to tie. But they turned the ball over and Chinook dribbled it out to seal the win.

Pula led Chinook with 19 points as he shot 7-for-13 from the field and 2-for-3 from deep. Fetter scored 13 points for Chinook and Niederegger contributed 11 points in the win. As a team, Chinook shot 50 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from deep. Reevis led Heart Butte with 24 points as he shot 6-for-17 from the field and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Chinook will next play either Roy-Winifred or Big Sandy in the semifinals Friday night at 4 p.m. at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
