Northern's Anthony Braggs Jr. shoots the ball against Rocky Mountain College at Armory Gymnasium last weekend. The Lights started a road trip at Western on Thursday night where they lost, 85-78, in overtime. The Skylights also played at Western on Thursday night where they lost 69-54.
The Montana State University-Northern Skylights and Montana Western Bulldogs brought frustratingly long losing streaks into their Frontier Conference matchup Thursday night. Unfortunately for Northern, it was Western who snapped its streak.
The Skylights lost to Montana Western 69-54 Thursday in Dillon. The Skylights started off rough getting down 23-13 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs kept a steady lead going into halftime 39-25. Northern cut the lead down to 10 a couple time, but just couldn't get it done.
The Skylights were led by Peyton Kehr, who had 17 points going 6-10 from the field. Ryley Kehr had 11 points and six rebounds. Shyann Krass and L'Tia Lawrence each added six points. Skylights shot a field goal percentage of 41, 41 percent from the arc, and 58 percent from the free throw line.
The loss dropped Northern to 0-9 in the Frontier Conference ahead of its game at Montana Tech Saturday afternoon.
Dawgs edge Lights in OT
The MSU-Northern men also suffered a tough loss in Dillon Thursday night. Only this one went five extra minutes, in what turned out to be an 85-78 overtime win by Western.
The Bulldogs pulled out ahead in the first half 41-35. The Lights went on 11-2 run to take back the lead in the second half. Western took back the lead, but it wasn't long before Northern take back the lead. Stephenson hit a three to tie that game 69-69. The Bulldogs had a chance for two free throws, but missed them both. David Harris was able to get a shot off before the buzzer, but couldn't get it to fall, pushing the game into overtime.
The Lights led early in overtime, but Stephenson hit two straight threes to put Western ahead for good.
The Lights were led by Mascio McCadney, who had a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Harris added a good game with 24 points going 4-5 from the 3-point line. Tanner McCliment-Call added 11 points, as Jesse Keltner scored 10.
“Just disappointed in our defense tonight. After a slow start and fighting through a lot of things that did not go our way, we did a great job of putting ourselves in position to finish the game. But we simply gave up too many late shots that we normally handle better,” head coach Shawn Huse said. “We had some guys really step up big for us off the bench. I was very proud of them, but unfortunately it was all for nothing in the world of sports … where you either win close games or you are miserable. There’s no in between We have a great defensive team and gave up some things we don’t normally give up.
“Credit Western for making the big shots. They came through in the end,” he continued. “Time to regroup and get back to work tomorrow. That’s all we can do. Every game in the Frontier is important in the end,”
The Lights (4-5, 16-8) will look to regroup Saturday afternoon at Montana Tech.
