Havre high short on judges for speech divisional tournament

Havre High School head speech and debate coach Tim Leeds said he is still looking for judges for the eastern Class A Speech, Drama and Debate Divisional Tournament Saturday at the high school.

“We have had a great response, but this is a pretty big tournament and we are losing some judges who signed up due to the illnesses running through the area,” Leeds said. “I am hoping a few more people will be able to step up and help us out.”

The tournament has rounds starting at 8:30 a.m. and running through 2:30 p.m. for debate and 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. for speech and drama.

Leeds added that he has lost contact with some people who judged regularly in the past, as they change emails and phone numbers, and if they want to get back on the list of judges they can contact him or use the online form.

The tournament determines which students get to compete at the Class A State Speech, Drama and Debate tournament, set for Jan. 28-29 in Corvallis.

The top 12 in each event at the eastern divisional tournament advance to state.

All of the Class A speech, debate and drama programs in the eastern half of the state will be at the tournament. Along with Havre, that is Park High School from Livingston, Fergus High School from Lewistown, Laurel High School, Billings Central High School, Lockwood High School, Custer County High School from Miles City, Dawson County High School from Glendive and Sidney High School.

Leeds said close to 180 students will be competing at the divisional tournament.

“This should be some good competition. These are the best Class A has to offer in the east half of the state,” he said.
