Hi-Line Girls Basketball
As the high school girls basketball season rolls across the Hi-Line, many teams are looking to separate themselves as postseason contenders while some teams are just trying to find a rhythm. Regardless of what side of the coin they fall on, they all competed hard last week as they all tried to achieve their respective goals.
The week got started Tuesday night with a matchup between the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds and the Dodson Coyotes. Looking to start the week on the right note, the Thunderbirds won, 57-31, to defeat the Coyotes.
Hi-Line basketball continued Friday night with several more games. The Harlem Wildcats played a tough game against Glasgow but lost 62-57 in overtime. The Wildcats took an early advantage for a 15-8 lead but the Scotties came back for a 27-25 lead at halftime. The Wildcats played well in the second half to tie the game, 50-50, to force overtime. But the Scotties pulled away in the extra period to pull out the win. Taya Trottier led Harlem with 17 points in the loss.
The Box Elder Bears and the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds played in a District 9C matchup Friday night which the Bears won 56-44. The Bears came out of the gates hot as they took an early 31-21 halftime lead. The Thunderbirds played better in the third quarter but the Bears pulled away for the win. Mariah Arkinson led the way for the Bears with 12 points.
In other 9C competition, the Chinook Sugarbeeters won, 62-52, over the North Star Knights. They played a competitive first half that ended with Chinook leading, 30-23, at halftime. The Knights then dominated the third quarter to take a 46-38 lead. The Sugarbeeters responded with a dominant fourth quarter to come back and win the game. Hallie Neibauer led Chinook with 23 points and Kaytlyn Domire led the Knights with 22 points.
The Big Sandy Pioneers got their weekend started with a 70-49 win over the Turner Tornadoes. The Pioneers jumped out early for a 26-7 lead, but Turner played well in the second quarter to trail, 36-36, at the half. But the Pioneers retook momentum in the third quarter to create an insurmountable lead. Eva Yeadon led Big Sandy with 17 points. Even though her team lost, Dakota Krass had a great game with 31 points as she connected on four 3-pointers and went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters continued to play well as they won, 41-29, over the defending-state champion Fort Benton Longhorns. They played a low-scoring and competitive first half, but the Sugarbeeters were able to squeak out a 17-16 halftime lead. The Sugarbeeters were able to gain traction on offense in the second half to pull away for the win. It was a team effort for Chinook as Neibauer, Alexus Seymour and Bree Swanson all scored 11 points. Ashlee Wang led Fort Benton with 11 points in the loss.
The North Star Knights bounced back from their earlier loss with a 56-33 win over the Turner Tornadoes Saturday.
