Virtual support group helps new moms during pandemic

Press release

The uncertainty of the pandemic is making it harder for new moms to find the support and socialization needed after delivering a new baby.

Rocky Mountain College Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program in conjunction with the MOMS grant has started a program to support these new moms by offering a virtual platform connecting moms across the state.

The Cuddling Cubs Playgroup is a seven-week virtual group that uses up-to-date education while facilitating a Zoom playgroup.

Isolation and the challenges of having a new baby can lead to depression and anxiety for many new parents. During a pandemic, this is even more relevant because many of the outlets and communities are not available to new moms right now. Many moms feel insecure about bringing their new baby to a setting that has an increased risk of illness and infection. This makes the virtual platform more appealing.

One mom of a past group stated how refreshing it was to be able to meet other moms from the comfort of her living room. The hope of the group is to provide support and decrease stress for new moms.

The group is offered 100 percent free of charge with all the supplies provided through the grant. The moms receive an incentive gift card to participate while the students delivering the group learn how to facilitate and support the moms.

The doctoral students created and deliver the playgroup under supervision of a licensed occupational therapist who specializes in care and education of babies and new mothers.

This special opportunity provides positive outcomes for everyone involved in the collaboration.
