Hi-Line Boys Roundup
As Hi-Line boys basketball teams returned from their winter breaks this past weekend, they were looking to get back into a groove and set the tone for the rest of the season. Some teams continued to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with while others are still trying to figure it out.
Hi-Line basketball got started in 2022 last Tuesday with a District 9C matchup between the Chinook Sugarbeeters and the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks. At the end of the night, it was the Hawks who started the new year with a 51-40 win.
The Sugarbeeters and Hawks went back and forth in the first quarter and they were tied, 8-8, at the end of the frame. The Hawks finally took advantage in the second quarter as they led 22-18 at halftime. The Hawks shut down the Chinook offense in the third quarter and the Sugarbeeters only scored five points as CJI pulled away for the win. Blake Harmon led the Hawks with 22 points while Oskar Pula scored 24 points for Chinook.
The Rocky Boy Stars got their year started with a 71-50 win over Malta at home Thursday. Many players had strong games for the Stars including Sean Gibson with his 27 points and Joe Demontiney with 20 points.
The Stars continued their strong start to the year with a 75-66 win over Fairfield Friday night. It looked like the Stars would dominate early on as they led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter. Fairfield was able to fight back to cut the deficit to single digits at halftime but Rocky Boy was able to hold on to win the game. Ben Crebs excelled for the Stars as he scored 36 points for the Stars. Gibson and Demontiney each scored 13 points in the win as well.
The CJI Hawks continued to play well Friday night with a 66-39 win over the North Star Knights. The Hawks took an early advantage as they led 29-19 at halftime. They then dominated the third quarter for a 56-32 lead heading to the fourth. Bryce Kammerzell led the Hawks Friday with 23 points while Braden Mattson scored 15 in the win. Rhett Wolery led the Knights with 12 points in the loss.
The Box Elder Bears started their weekend on the right note Friday night with a 71-63 win over the Big Sandy Pioneers. The Bears controlled the game early on with a 34-25 lead at halftime. But the Pioneers stormed back in the third quarter to take a 47-45 lead. The Bears then retook control in the fourth to pull away for the win. Tyrus LaMere led the Bears with 26 points while Wylee Snapp led Big Sandy with 22 points in the loss.
The Harlem Wildcats also played Friday night where they defeated Chinook, 74-67. The Wildcats jumped out early as they led 49-24 at halftime. The Sugarbeeters made a comeback in the second half, but they were unable to overcome the early deficit. R.J. Ramone led the Wildcats with 26 points while Pula led the Sugarbeeters with 18 points.
The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds got to play again Friday where they hosted the Turner Tornadoes at home. Despite Turner's best effort, the Thunderbirds pulled out the 60-49 win to start the weekend. The Fort Benton Longhorns also played Friday where they picked up a 56-27 win over Conrad.
The CJI Hawks could not maintain their play Saturday as they suffered a 52-48 loss to the HLP Thunderbirds. The Hawks did start the game strong as they led 23-20 at halftime. But the Thunderbirds dominated the third quarter to take a 38-28 lead. The Hawks tried to rally but the Thunderbirds held on for the win. Daniel Henry led the Thunderbirds with 21 points in the contest while Harmon scored 21 for the Hawks.
The Fort Benton Longhorns played again Saturday where they picked up a 56-44 win over the Box Elder Bears. It was a fight early on as the teams were tied, 11-11, at the end of the first quarter. But the Longhorns were able to take momentum in the second quarter for a 28-18 lead at halftime. The Longhorns were then able to keep the Bears at bay en route to a victory. Cody Evans had a great game for the Longhorns as he scored 31 points in the contest. Tyrus LaMere led the Bears with 17 points in the game.
After some tough games to start the week, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were able to pick up a 82-39 win over the Turner Tornadoes Saturday. The Sugarbeeters controlled the game early as they led 48-16 at halftime. The Tornadoes did fight back in the third quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome. After their loss Friday, the Big Sandy Pioneers bounced back Saturday with a 55-35 win over the North Star Knights.
