Havre High School speech and debate took a small holiday team to a small holiday tournament in Fort Benton over the weekend and saw some success.
Havre”s Izabelle “Izzy” Hagen, a freshman, did well in the largest event at the tournament, placing fifth in dramatic oral interpretation of literature. Junior Sophia Dawson, also a first-year competitor for Havre, placed eighth in that event.
Freshman Piper Huston received some good comments from her judges in that event, but did not make the top eight.
Havre’s debaters ended up competing against each other in Fort Benton, with debaters from other schools not making the competition at the tournament.
In public forum debate, seniors Dartanion Kaftan, a fourth-year Havre debater, and Riley Klein, in his second year in the event, defeated junior Caitlyn “Corbyn” Ehry and sophomore Carinna Kline, both first year debaters, in three straight close debates.
Kaftan and Klein took first with Ehry and Kline finishing second.
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, two Havre juniors faced off for three rounds. Third-year veteran Paige Betelsen defeated first-year debater Sterling Shelton in three straight, with judges also commenting on the close, high-quality rounds in that event.
Havre now takes the holiday break off from competition, with the next tournament set in Shelby Jan. 8.
