Coyote Derby set in Big Sandy area for January

The three-day 5th Annual Big Sandy American Legion Coyote Derby will kick off the new year Jan. 7-9 in the Big Sandy area.

To be entered in the early drawing, organizer Lindsay Boyce said, paid entries must be postmarked by Dec. 23.

Cost to enter the derby is $40 per person in the team — up to four people can be entered in each team. The teams will be entered in open class or calling class, and a $1,000 pot is guaranteed for each class.

Friday, Jan. 7, 5-8 p.m. at the Jerry Martin Memorial Hall, 115 Johannes Ave., will be devoted to check-in for the teams, along with a rules meeting and an opportunity to participate in a calcutta. Organizers have arranged a chili dinner for $5 per plate.

Participants will have all day Saturday to hunt coyotes, then make their way to the day’s check-in between 4 and 8 p.m.

Check-in Sunday will end at 5 p.m. The evening will include a pulled-pork dinner for $5 per person. The winners will be announced and door prizes given away. Fur buyers will also be on hand Sunday night.

A raffle with a limited 350 tickets will award a Rock Island VR60 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun for first place, an ATN X-Sight 4K Pro Smart Day/Night Rifle Scope – Ultra HD for second place and a Montana Hammer knife for third in a drawing Sunday Jan. 9. Tickets are $20 each and $100 for a bundle of six. The ticket holder doesn’t have to be present to win.
