Havre battles in return of Mining City Duals

The Mining City Duals in Butte is a tournament the Havre Blue Ponies have had large amounts of success in over the years. And it was back this past weekend.

The tournament started Friday with pool play where Havre High competed in duals against Polson, Gallatin High School and Helena Capital. After Havre went 3-0 in pool play to finish first, the Blue Ponies competed in the tournament Saturday. Even though the Ponies lost their duals to Great Falls CMR and Frenchtown, HHS head coach Beau LaSalle was pleased with how his team played in the dual tournament.

“I thought we wrestled pretty well. The kids competed hard,” LaSalle said. “It’s a fun way to run a tournament with the duals. The whole team being right there and progressing as a team is fun so I think they enjoyed it and they handled it well.”

In their first dual of the tournament, the Ponies defeated Polson, 70-0, as every Pony won their match. Wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, Matthew Lemer pinned Ryley Knutson 1:43 into the match. At 120, Havre’s Colter Soloman pinned his opponent Izayus Prewett 1:49 into the match. At 126 pounds, Havre’s Carson Harris won, 12-4, over Brian Lyles for a major decision. At 132 pounds, Havre’s Dominic Perkins pinned Micah Craig 46 seconds into the match. At 138 pounds, Havre’s Jacob Kunz won by forfeit. Wrestling at 145 pounds, Havre’s Tristian Stygles pinned Noah Trosper 1:02 in the match. At 152 pounds, Riley Pleninger pinned Casey Trosper 49 seconds in. At 160 pounds, Kendall Pleninger won by forfeit. At 170 pounds, Kale VanCampen finished his opponent Jaren Keene with a pin 3:37 in. Havre’s Pierce Caplette, Randy Tommerup and Zale Thomas all won their matches by forfeit.

In their second dual, the Ponies defeated Class AA Gallatin, 45-22. Lemer won, 8-3, over Isaiah Christiansen. Soloman won by forfeit and Perkins pinned Kameron Amende 38 seconds into the match. Kunz defeated Bode Naffzinger with a pin 2:46 into the match. Riley Pleninger made quick work of Tillman Bartholomew with a pin 46 seconds into the match. VanCampen defeated Landry Cooley with a pin 1:37 in. Wrestling at 182 pounds, Orion Thivierge pinned Tucker McKay 45 seconds into the match. Caplette pinned Kameron Keyser 59 seconds into their match.

In their last dual of pool play, the Ponies defeated AA Helena Capital, 42-32, to earn first in their pool. Lemer pinned Cashton Spolar 2:00 into the match while Soloman pinned Dustin Campbell 1:22 in. Stygles won with a pin 1:34 into his match over Nick Flies. Riley Pleninger pinned Cole Graham 4:55 in. VanCampen made quick work of Tyler Crum with a pin 57 seconds into his match. Thivierge won his match by forfeit while Caplette pinned Tucker Zanto 1:50 into the match.

The Ponies wrestled in an extra dual against Missoula Big Sky that they won 39-23. Lemer pinned Gavin Lemmon 1:02 into the match while Riley Pleninger pinned Shaun Billingsley 1:31 into their match. Kendall Pleninger also won with a pin as he defeated Charlie Wats 1:27 into the match. Tommerup won, 11-7, over Hunter Curtis and Thomas won by forfeit. VanCampen won by forfeit while Thivierge pinned Terron Brose 1:33 into the match. Thivierge is coming off a state-championship season and is already rounding into form as he won all of his matches over the weekend in Butte.

“He wrestled well,” LaSalle said. “He had a couple of forfeits so he didn’t get to have a match in every dual. But when he did go out there, he did a very good job for us.”

In the first round of the championship bracket, the Ponies lost to AA CMR, 48-18, but some Ponies did have strong showings. Harris won, 6-3, over Landon De La Garza and Perkins won by forfeit. Thivierge pinned Dorian White 1:55 into the match and Tommerup won, 10-3, over Jacob Reeves.

“They got a good team and we had a couple of matches that didn’t go our way and it kind of snowballed in the other direction,” LaSalle said.

While the Ponies did better in the first round of the consolation bracket, they still lost to Class A powerhouse Frenchtwon, 33-27. Kunz won with a pin over Brayden McDonald 3:06 into the match and Kendall Pleninger won, 8-6, over Smokey Stoker. VanCampen made quick work of Dillon Warner as he pinned him 45 seconds into the match. Thivierge pinned Noah Rausch 3:12 into the match and Caplette won, 5-2, over Brody Harris. Tommerup capped off his weekend with a 5-2 victory over Philip Herald. The Ponies did have to forfeit a match because of an injury which might have made the difference in the dual.

“We had an injury at one of our weights so we had to forfeit that,” LaSalle said. “As far as points go, we could have won in a couple other places but anytime you give up forfeits in a dual, it’s tough.”

While he wished the weekend had ended on a better note, LaSalle saw a lot from his team that he liked. He commended the performances of Tommerup and Caplette who moved up a weight class for the tournament which will help them later in their regular classes. He believes this also demonstrates the character of this team early in the season.

“I thought our mentality was very good,” LaSalle said. “Individually, we’re getting tougher and mentally, we’re getting tougher.”

The Ponies will next wrestle at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls this weekend.
