Butch was born February 10, 1957, in Havre to James and Delores (Parks) Welter. He was raised in Havre, graduating from Havre High School in 1975. He attended a vo-tech in Florida, from which he received a certificate in motorcycle maintenance and repair.
Soon after, he returned home to Havre, where he married, and the couple had three children before divorcing.
Butch began working for Burlington Northern Railroad upon his return to Havre, and he retired from BNSF in 2017.
He married Lori Boyce in 1998, and the couple remained in Havre until 2018, when they relocated to Great Falls to be near grandchildren.
Butch was a fun-loving man who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and any activity outdoors. He helped to build Camp 39 in the Bear Paws, and his hunting site of choice was the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Butch loved to listen to music and play his guitar, and his high-velocity painting took up a great deal of his free time. He was a family-oriented man with a big heart who loved his biological and bonus kids alike, and he treasured time with all of them and his grandchildren. He was also an adrenaline junkie, having taken up skydiving and motorcycle riding when he was younger.
Butch is survived by his wife, Lori Welter of Great Falls; children, Alexis (Joel) Barnes of Humbolt, TN, Tristan (Nicole) Welter of Boca Raton, FL, Preston Welter of Havre, Kristi (Jeromy) Riggin of Great Falls and Shaundel (Matthew Cullen) Boyce of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, Jayce and Gracie Riggin, Ali Barnes, and Jameson Cullen; parents, James and Delores Welter of Havre; siblings, Teresa (John Keeley) Welter and Byron (Robyn) Welter, all of Havre; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
