Celebrating History: Halloween a century ago

With Halloween coming up soon, many were hosting fun gatherings for family and friends. The first entry was published in the October 29, 1921, edition of the Havre Daily Promoter with the following being published the following day.

HALLOWE’EN SPOOK PARTY AT METHODIST CHURCH

Members of the Epworth League plan to give a Hallowe’en spook party in the social rooms of the Methodist Episcopal church this evening.

Ghosts will conduct the guests through the channels of mystery and graveyards of horror.

A delicious Hallowe’en lunch will be served. Everybody is invited to attend and converse with departed spirits.

ENTERTAINS FRIENDS AT HALLOWE’EN PARTY

Miss Helen Hirshberg entertained a number of her friends at a Hallowe’en party at her home on Third avenue last evening.

Decorations were in orange and black with many witches and black cats and pumpkins in evidence. After an evening spent playing Hallowe’en games delicious refreshments were served.  Those present were the Misses Janet MacKenzie, Cooley Carruth, Esie May Battram, Kathryn Mathews, Eleanor Mathews, Esther Skylstead, Geraldine Bishell, Lillian Bossout, Katheryn Morris, Elizabeth Clack, Lucretta Archibald, Georgia Broderick, Corrine Loranger, Dorothy Loranger, Julia Ryan, Grace Lamey Georgia Barrett, Marion Holtz and Catherine McCarthy.

CAMP FIRE GIRLS ENTERTAIN FRIENDS

Ten camp fire girls entertained ten of their friends at the home of Miss Marie Yeon Thursday evening at 8 o’clock at a Hallowe’en party.

The guests were ushered into the house via the coal chute into a beautifully decorated room filled with ghosts and spooks.  The evening was spent playing Hallowe’en games, telling fortunes and diving for apples in a tub of water.

A delicious luncheon was served at 10:30 o’clock.

Plans were underway for the annual Armistice Day celebration as well.

AMERICAN LEGION MEETS WEDNESDAY AT CITY HALL

A regular meeting of Havre Post No. 11, of the American Legion, will be held at the city council room in the City hall Wednesday night, November 2, at 8 o’clock.

Officers for the ensuing year will be elected and it is requested that every member be present.

Plans for the Third Annual Military ball, the evening of Armistice Day, will be completed at the meeting.  Other plans for the celebration of Armistice Day will be discussed.

Every ex-service ma and especially members of the Legion are requested to attend.
