Grateful Bread may close as owner retires

Over the past 12 years, Rick Neuwerth has made The Grateful Bread at The Atrium Mall into one of the best-known bakeries and lunch restaurants on the Hi-Line, but, the bakery's time will come to an end as Neuwerth steps away because of his age and health.

Neuwerth said he has been trying to sell the business over the past week but has only received a few inquiries in response to his Facebook post. He is looking for a $40,000 offer but if he does not get one by Oct. 29, he will have to shut down the business.

As he heads into retirement, Neuwerth said he will focus on his passions. Along with working on landscaping his yard, he wants to remodel his 1967 Mustang fastback in retirement.

Neuwerth opened The Grateful Bread back in the summer of 2009. Over the years, he said, he has made many meaningful connections with the Havre community as he has worked with groups like the local soup kitchen, Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line and fundraisers.

He said he also appreciates the support of the Havre community for helping pay his medical bills for his cancer treatments.

"It's just been a great thing. I've enjoyed it, and the people of Havre are great and amazing," Neuwerth said. "I've given a lot to Havre and Havre's given a lot to me."
