Northern finishes fall Frontier golf season

MSU-N X-Country teams race in Billings

This past Friday in Billings, the Montana State University-Northern cross country teams competed at the Yellowjacket Invitational. While the men’s team only took eighth at the meet and the women’s team did not place, MSU-N head coach Chad Spangler believes most of his runners are progressing.

“Seventy-five percent of them are progressing closer to the front of the race so I’m happy with that,” Spangler said. “The couple that didn’t progress as much this week as I wanted, I think they might have just overtrained a little bit so we’re going to address that this week and maybe slow it down a little and recover.”

The Lights finished eighth in the meet with a score of 171. University of Montana won the men’s meet with a score of 64. Montana State University-Billings took second with a score of 91 and Black Hills State finished third with a score of 105.

MSU-N’s top runner, Field Soosloff finished 18th in the 8K with a time of 26:15.3. Jackson Wilson from Rocky Mountain College took first at the meet with a time of 24:50.3. MSU-N’s Liam Baez-Terry finished 29th with a time of 26:51.9 and Michael Irvine took 30th with a finish of 26:54.7. Albus Brady took 38th place for the Lights with a time of 27:21.1. Jaden Koon took 62nd with a time of 29:28.1 and August SpottedWolf finished 65th with a time of 29:41.5. Eddia Harmon took 74th with a time of 31:07.1.

The MSU-N women’s cross country team did not have enough runners compete to place as a team. Carroll College won that meet with a score of 35. Montana Western took second with a score of 85 and Black Hills State took third with a score of 88.

RMC’s Sydney Little Light won the womens’ 5K meet with a time of 18:09.9. Allison Tigert had the best finish for the Skylights as she took 21st with a time of 20:12.1. Grace Schwenke took 38th for the Skylights with a finish of 21:07.5. Fellow MSU-N runners, Hannah Haslem and Brooke Holland, took 50th and 52nd respectively in the meet.

As the Lights and Skylights near the halfway point of their season, Spangler just wants his runners to be relaxed. His runners are just behind the teams ahead of them so Spangler believes if they stick with it, they will get results.

“On the men’s side, the big story has been for three meets in a row is that we’re getting beat by the teams just ahead of us only by a couple points,” Spangler said. “The two things I want them to get out of the last meet is that every point counts and to be confident and relaxed with whatever pace you find yourself running.”

The MSU-N cross country teams will next run this Saturday in the Inland Empire Meet in Lewiston, Idaho.

Northern Golf wraps up the fall

Last week also saw the MSU-N golf teams finish the fall portion of their schedule at the Rocky Mountain Invite in Billings.
