Fire restrictions remain as fire season winds down

Counties in the area are sticking with their current approach to fire restrictions despite very few of them reporting fires in the past week.

During a regional fire call Tuesday Hill County was one of only three counties which reported any fire activity in the past week.

Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean said the area saw two human-caused fires which collectively covered about five acres but were quickly put out.

Roosevelt, another county with fire activity, fared far worse with three human-caused fires that burned 2,730 acres.

Fergus County also reported a large fire near Lewistown which has since grown to over 11,750 acres.

No counties changed their fire restrictions and all agreed to continue having fire calls for at least another week.

On the call the national Weather Service’s Glasgow office reported that a front will be moving into the area today with cooler weather but it’s unlikely that it will bring much precipitation, though there may be a stronger front coming into the area mid-week next week.

The area’s critical fire conditions will be moving east into North Dakota but some areas of eastern Montana will likely still see said conditions stick around today.
