The Montana high school speech and debate season is about to begin, and the Havre High School team is holding a parent’s meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
“Last year was a strange season, and we are looking forward to getting back to some face-to-face competition this year,” head coach Tim Leeds said. “We are hoping a large crowd of students come out to compete.”
With restrictions due to the pandemic in place last year, all Montana tournaments were held online, with the Havre team never leaving town despite competing against the other Class A teams in a shortened season.
Leeds said although that had some benefits including training students to make live online presentations, it will be good for the students to get back to competing directly.
Havre competes at invitational tournaments around the state into January, with the season culminating in the Class A divisional tournaments, with Havre hosting the eastern divisional tournament this season Jan. 22, then the Class A state tournament the following weekend, this year in Corvallis.
The season wraps up Feb. 11-12 with the qualifying tournament for the National Speech and Debate Association national qualifying tournament in Billings.
Leeds said Monday’s meeting will cover events available for competition, team rules and the season and answers to any questions parents have.
