Our View - Condolences and thanks on Amtrak derailment

Havre Daily News offers its deepest condolences to the families of the people who died and to the people injured in the derailment Saturday near Joplin.

And we offer our deepest thanks to the people who responded to help.

The situation is tragic, with three people killed, several hospitalized and dozens or more injured of the 141 people traveling on or 16 working on the train.

We cannot express how sorry the tragedy makes us feel.

And thanks to the dozens, likely hundreds, of people who responded to help.

Emergency responders, personnel and volunteers from counties around the area responded to the derailment, with people volunteering use of their homes and businesses as well as helping people get off the train, bringing supplies and doing more to help with the situation.

It shows the Montana spirit, neighbor helping neighbor and people helping people they don’t even know.

And thanks to Amtrak, which quickly responded to get an incident team to the site to help the people affected, set up an assistance center in Great Falls and sent nurse case managers for assistance to the people hospitalized.

Again, our thanks to all who helped at the tragedy and our deepest condolences to the people who experienced it.
