Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Katharine Greenwood, Havre High golf

Katharine Greenwood always has time to hit the golf course

So far in her senior year at Havre High School, Katharine Greenwood has had much on her plate. Along with managing her final year of high school and planning for her future, she has also been focused on golfing and her responsibilities as class president. While she has many responsibilities, Greenwood knows how to not let them overwhelm her.

"If I go to golf, then that's golf time. I don't try to think about class stuff when I'm practicing. It's one thing at a time," Greenwood said. "If I'm upset about something else regarding class stuff then I keep it away from my game."

This week will probably be the busiest of the year for her. As class president, she is involved in planning for Havre High's homecoming. In golf, she is preparing for the divisional meet this Friday in Sidney. Not to mention, Greenwood also has a job and plenty of other things going on, and yet, she believes she is ready to golf this weekend.

"(I feel) pretty prepared. I've been playing a lot lately and I'm more prepared than I was last year for divisionals," Greenwood said. "I think we all have a chance to make it to state this year."

Greenwood got into golf during her sophomore year. She originally had made the volleyball team, but her best friend encouraged her to join the golf team. Since then, she has grown to enjoy the game of golf because it is an individual sport.

"I like the individuality of it," Greenwood said. "It's not a team sport compared to other sports I've played. It's working on yourself and you're not affecting your team."

Over the course of her senior season, Greenwood has enjoyed becoming a leader on her team.

"Katharine has been great to coach," HHS head golf coach George Ferguson said. "She's very coachable, she's our senior on the girls team and she's doing great this year. But what's really impressive to me is, Katharine has done exactly what you would hope for as a coach, she's progressively gotten better. From where she started to where she is now, it's really impressive. She's become a very strong golfer, and I'm really proud of her."

Greenwood also enjoys playing on the courses more than previous years because she is more familiar with them. She has also enjoyed playing on the same team as her little sister, Kylie.

"It's better this year. We've both grown more and we've both grown to like the sport a lot more than we did last year," Greenwood said about playing with her sister this fall. "We're more excited to play with each other and we can play in the summers. It's a little more competitive than it was a couple years ago."

After high school, Greenwood will attend college. She has narrowed down her career choices to either becoming a dental hygienist or a high school history teacher.

For now, though, it's on to divisionals and a chance to qualify for her second-straight state tournament. Greenwood can do that this Friday when the Ponies take part in the Eastern A in Sidney.

HDN: Over the years, what is the most important thing you learned in the HHS golf program?

Greenwood: "Attitude plays a big role in how you'll do your game. If you have a bad attitude, you're not going to play good. But if you have a positive attitude and a positive outlook on how you're going to play that day, you'll play better automatically."

HDN: After you move on from Havre High, what will you miss the most about the HHS golf program?

Greenwood: "I'll miss just practicing at Prairie Farms Golf Course. I'll miss the driving range. I always get frustrated but I do like it."

HDN: What do you hope to teach your little sister about golf?

Greenwood: "It's the little things that matter. Like making sure that you're taking your time on the greens or even if you have a bad drive you can make up for it later on the hole."

HDN: Do you have a favorite golfer or professional athlete?

Greenwood: "Not really but I do like Tiger Woods. His little fist pump thing that he always does."

HDN: When you get time off, what do you like to do?

Greenwood: "I really love fishing and going boating out at our cabin (at) Fresno. I just like being out on the water."
