Pony golfers fight at soggy East Glacier

After a highly-successful Havre Invitational on Thursday, the turnaround for the Havre High golf teams was short.

Last Friday, the Blue Ponies traveled to East Glacier for the 2021 Browning Invitational, where they faced Western A teams like Polson, Whitefish, Frenchtown, Ronan, Columbia Falls and host Browning. And, the tournament was tough because of rain and cold according to head coach George Ferguson.

"Pretty early for those types of conditions," Ferguson said. "I'm not sure anybody was ready for that. It felt like October. But our kids really battled, they kept a very positive outlook, and hopefully, we learned a thing or two because there's a good chance we'll see that type of weather again before this season is over."

As for the results, the Havre boys tied for second with Whitefish, while Polson ran away with the team title. Individually, Theron Peterson led the Ponies with an 88, while Kale Reno came in at 89 and Caleb Spangler shot 90. The HHS scoring was rounded out by Lane Kinsella and Reid Kato.

On the girls side, Havre finished second overall, with Polson in first. Shea Reber paced the Ponies for the second straight meet with a 111, while Katharine Greenwood shot 125 and Callie Bebee finished at 128. Cali Pyrak also shot 132 for the Ponies.

"It was a tough day, it was our fourth round in five days," Ferguson said. "But I thought our kids grinder. That's part of the process. We have to learn to grind. And East Glacier was certainly a grind. So I was proud of the kids. They fought through it."

The Ponies won't return to competition until Aug. 31 when they battle Lewistown and Livingston in the Jawbone Match Play Classic.
