The weather wasn't summer like, but the Havre High golf teams took advantage of their only full home meet of the 2021 season.
Thursday at Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek Golf Course, the ponies played host to golfers from Miles City, Browning, Lewistown, CMR and GFH in what head coach George Ferguson called, a great day of golf for his teams, and for everybody who hit the course.
"It was a blast," Ferguson said. "I think all the kids enjoyed the courses, it was a strong tournament, and it was just an awesome day of golf. We love the Havre Invite. Our kids love playing on their home course. It's senior day. It's just a special tournament for us, and I was really happy for all of our kids, because they did great."
In the varsity tourney at Prairie Farms, Havre did do great.
On he boys side, the Blue Ponies finished first with a team total of 344, 14 strokes ahead of rival Lewistown. Individually, senior Caleb Spangler took medalist honors with a 77, while fellow senior Theron Peterson finished second with an 80. Kale Reno was just outside thew top five with a 91, while Lane Kinsella shot 96 and Reid Kato finished with a 97. Havre also had a JV team in the varsity tournament, and freshman Matt Huse led the way for the second unit with a 98.
"Happy for our three senior boys," Ferguson said. "To do win the team title in their last Havre Invite, that's big. They played really well. Caleb and Theron swept the medals. I'm just really proud of that group, and I think they're showing already that our boys team is going to be really strong again this season."
Havre's girls also looked solid.
The Ponies shot a 450 to place second behind Eastern A rival Miles City. Individually, sophomore Shea Reber placed fourth with 104, while veteran golfers Katharine Greenwood and Sylvie McKeon-Hanson tied with scores of 114. Freshman Callie Bebee shot 118 in her first Havre Invite, while Cali Pyrak rounded out the scoring for the Ponies.
"This is the second tournament of the season, and our girls scores are quickly coming down," Ferguson said. "I thought they all played really well on their home course. I think they played with a lot more confidence. Shea Reber had a really good round. But overall, all of their scores improved from just the beginning of the week. So very proud of how the girls played."
While Ferguson was plenty pleased with how both his varsity teams played Thursday, he was even happier about the tournament as a whole, and said he can't wait until the next Havre Invite.
"All our kids were able to play," Ferguson said. "That's so huge because we don't get that many opportunities and they got to all play at home in front of family and friends. But we also get to showcase our golf program on two great golf courses. That's something we take a lot of pride in. So it was a special day. It was an exciting day of golf, and I'm just proud of all our kids, and very proud to be the head coach of this program."
It will be a short turnaround for the Ponies, who head to East Glacier this morning for the Browning Invitational.
