After a state-filled four-sport junior year, Blue Pony Theron Peterson aims even higher on the links
Last fall, Theron Peterson was one of five golfers from the Havre High boys golf team to make the state meet in Butte. While the Blue Ponies failed to win a state title, it was an experience that Peterson won't soon forget. Now as he heads into his final season in the HHS golf program, Peterson hopes to reach those same heights again.
"Making it to state and having fun with everyone on my team," Peterson said were his goals for his senior season.
"Theron is one of those kids we all love to coach, we all love to have in our programs," HHS tennis and golf coach George Ferguson said. "He is one of those kids that's so much fun to be around, he's got an infectious personality. He's just a great kid. But he's also a heck of a competitor, he loves to compete, and he's so coachable. He is really a coach's dream, and I've been lucky to have coached him in not one, but two of his favotire sports."
Peterson's affinity for golf began around the age of seven when his father introduced him to the sport. Since then, he has grown to love the game as well as appreciate the friendships he has made because of the sport.
Golf is not the only sport that Peterson competes in as he plays for the Havre Ice Hawks hockey team, Havre High tennis team (winning a Class A state championship) and Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club throughout the year. As a member of all these teams the past year, Peterson reached a level of success that most high school athletes could only dream of as all four teams qualified for their state tournaments last year.
"It was very fun being able to experience all the different state tournaments that are in all my sports that I play," Peterson said. "It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I'm doing something right with sports."
Playing multiple sports runs in the family, as Peterson's older sister played hockey, softball and golf growing up. While learning from his older sibling, Peterson just made sure to try his best as he followed in his sister's footsteps.
As a senior, he will only get one more season with all of those teams over the next year. After high school, he plans on attending college but has not chosen a college or a major yet. He is also not sure if he will get the chance to compete in college but if he finds an opportunity to play golf, tennis, baseball or hockey collegiately, he will take it.
Peterson's senior season on the golf course started with this week's Great Falls Invitational and continues with his senior day before the Havre Invite Thursday morning at Prairie Farms Golf Course. The Blue Ponies will host Lewistown, Browning, Miles City, GFH and CMR in what should a be a very competitive day of golf. Before that tournament however, the HDN caught up with Peterson for five more questions.
HDN: What do you enjoy about hockey?
Peterson: "I enjoy being on the ice with my friends. I like being able to play with my friends all winter and it always gives me something to do."
HDN: What do you enjoy about tennis?
Peterson: "Probably being able to compete at a high level of play for a state championship."
HDN: What do you love the most about baseball?
Peterson: "Probably being able to compete with the best teams in the state and making it to the state tournament."
HDN: Do you have any hobbies outside of sports?
Peterson: "I like to do outdoor stuff like fishing and go to the mountains and camp."
HDN: Where do you like to camp?
Peterson: "The Bear Paws. Hang out with my family and friends."
