Skylights add NCAA DII forward

The 2021-22 women's basketball season is fast approaching, and the Montana State University-Northern Skylights just added an important piece to the puzzle.

Northern women’s basketball coach Chris Mouat has announced the signing of Hazel Fui to join the Skylight program in the fall. Fui, a 5-10 forward from Logan, Australia, previously competed at both Salt Lake Community College and Chadron State College.

“Hazel is a great addition for us," Mouat said. "She has good size and can really play anywhere from the point guard spot to the small forward position. She is very versatile and an outstanding defender, and brings a dynamic skill set to our program. She shoots solid percentages from the field and the three-point line, but is also very good at the rim and posting up.”

As a freshman and sophomore, Fui played at NJCAA powerhouse Salt Lake Community College. As a freshman, she averaged 6.1 points and 4 rebounds per game. As a sophomore, she averaged 5.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 36 percent from the three-point line. In 2020, the Bruins went 22-7, were ranked 18th nationally, and qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament before it was canceled due to the pandemic.

This past season, Fui competed at NCAA Division II Chadron State College. In a shortened season, she saw action in 8 games. She was third on the team in scoring at 7.1 points per game and averaged 2.1 rebounds per game. Fui shot 36 percent from the field and 49 percent from the three-point line (also good for second on the team).

“Hazel brings some excellent experience to our program after playing at a high-level NJCAA program and an NCAA Division II program," Mouat said. "She was a junior college teammate of current Skylight Cameron Mooney, so we’d actually seen her play a lot in junior college. She has the potential to make a big impact on our program right away, and we are really excited about her future in a Skylight uniform.”

Hazel is the daughter of Ben and Norma Fui.
