After there was no Great Northern Fair in 2020, the return of the fair this summer is another sign that things are finally getting back to normal. With the return of the fair, events will also return to the outdoor arena at the fairgrounds. The junior rodeo Wednesday night kicked off the return festivities in the outdoor arena, with many events that went on through the night and both returning and new riders got the chance to enjoy the night.
"It felt good. I haven't been to this rodeo before but it brought good stock and it was just a lot of fun," said Quinn Rodewald who participated in the junior rodeo.
The evening started with the first section of sheep riders from the ages of 4 to 8 years old. Kayden Loch took first place in the first event of the night with a ride time of 14.2 seconds. Avyn Hipple took second with a time of 10.19 seconds and Jordan Hanson took third with a time of 7.04 seconds.
The flag racing event for four- to eight-year-olds followed up that event. With a finish of 9.39 seconds, Tipton Burcham took first place in the event. Colt Taylor finished with a time of 10.72 seconds for second place and Rome Kallenberger finished third with a time of 11.51 seconds.
The junior rodeo then returned to sheep riding for four- to eight-year-olds. Kace Scheele took first in this section with a ride time of 7.01 seconds. Oliver Rosette took second with a time of 5.3 seconds and Stetson Watson took third with a time of 3.68 seconds.
The four- to eight-year-olds then moved on to the barrels where Gwennt Gauer took first with a time of 18.96 seconds, Just behind her were Jhet Ahlgren in second with a time of 19.57 seconds and Aspen Burcham with a time of 22.38 seconds.
The first nine- to thirteen-year-old event came right after with the steer riding. However, only one rider, Wes Cox, scored to take first with a score of 40 points. The rodeo returned to another event for the four- to eight-year-olds, this time with the goat untie competition. Ahlgren took first with a time of 7.56 seconds while Aspen Burcham took second with a finish of 8.06 seconds and Taylor took third with a time of 10.03 seconds.
The next event was the chute dog for nine- to thirteen-year-olds. Cox again took first in a competition with a finish of 13.73 seconds. Rodewald finished in second behind him with a time of 18.13 seconds.
The last event for four- to eight-year-olds was the pole bending competition. Ahlgren won the second event of the night with a finish of 25.02 seconds. Gauer took second with a time of 26.57 seconds and Aspen Burcham finished third with a time of 29.79 seconds.
The rodeo then moved on to the pole bending competition for the nine- to thirteen-year-olds. Aariana Henry took first with a finish of 21.79 seconds while Bailee Leeds took second with a time of 23.89 seconds and Cassidy Leeds finished third with a time of 24.21 seconds.
Pole bending then shifted to the fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds for their first event of the night. Aislinn Handy started the night off with a first-place finish with a time of 21.95 seconds. Allee Bartlett took second with a time of 23.4 seconds and Kyla Burchard took third with a time of 24.2 seconds.
The rodeo moved back to the nine- to thirteen-year-olds for their flag racing event. In this event, Cayden Chapman took first with a finish of 9.88 seconds. In second was Ashlynn Gibson with a time of 12.27 seconds and in third was Kaia Spencer with a finish of 14.26 seconds.
The fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds then got a chance for their barrels competition where Handy won another event with a time of 16.52 seconds. Kassidy Pursley finished second with a time of 16.82 seconds and Burchard took third with a finish of 16.89 seconds.
The nine- to thirteen-year-olds then got their shot at the barrels competition which finished with Hedy Spencer taking home first with a time of 17.11 seconds. Kianda Tatsey took second with a time of 17.52 seconds and Chapman finished third with a time of 18.53 seconds.
Goat tying then came up for the fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds. Mary Gibson took first with a finish of 9.03 seconds while Burchard took second with a time of 10.02 seconds and Bartlett took third with a time of 10.03 seconds.
As the only competitor in the tie down event for fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds, Ethan Marceau finished with a time of 27.28 seconds. Burchard then took first in the breakaway event for fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds as the only rider to finish as she had a time of 3.49 seconds.
Nine- to thirteen-year-olds then got their shot at the breakaway event where more of their riders scored. Cooper Fisher took first with a time of 3.81 seconds while Kale Ereaux took second with a time of 3.83 seconds and Henry took third with a time of 3.94 seconds.
The junior rodeo ended the long night with a pair of team events. First was the team roping event where Ty Kittson and Rebecca Stroh took first with a time of 18.35 seconds. Martin Watson and Mervin Whitford took second with a finish of 20.75 seconds and Alex Four Colors and Cody McCabe finished with a time of 25.88 seconds to take third.
The junior rodeo then ended the night with probably its most fun event of the night with the monkey on a rope competition. Chapman and Gibson took first with a time of 38.39 seconds. Right behind them were Quinn and Kayla Rodewald with a time of 48.45 seconds.
With the junior rodeo now over, the Great Northern RAM Rodeo will now take over the outdoor arena for the next few days. The rodeo will start tonight at 7 p.m. and then continue Friday night at 7 p.m.
