Walking around the yard at 1468 Lincoln Ave., you are seeing a 22-year labor of love in progress.
Vic and Sara Sieglock are the enthusiastic owners. Sara says the lawn is Vic's to water, mow and weedeat - he did build her flower beds; she is the flower person. The yard is lush and green with three separate flower areas bordered by cement blocks arranged in tasteful curves. Each contains a variety of colorful perennials, annuals and flowers handed down for generations. Sara says she comes from a long line of flower lovers, beginning with her grandparents and parents who settled in the Chinook area in the 1890s.
A green ash tree overhangs the southeast garden which was the first garden and an array of pinks, coreopsis of varied colors and, of course, daisies! The northeast garden again has a variety of flowers, including nine different roses all blooming at the same time this summer - first time ever Sara exclaimed. There are peach and other unusual irises, many of which had been passed down. Purple salvia serves as a backdrop for the area. Several colors of sweet Williams were passed down from her mom as, were some of the irises.
Located in the northwest corner of the yard and the most recent is the Memorial Garden in honor of Pete and Joyce Magnusson, Sara's parents. This area has a green quiet feel with statuary and another volunteer ash tree shading it. A sticky pumpkin plant with interesting thorns sits next to moon flowers. A plant called Mrs. Hogg is named for the Geraldine woman who grew it and passed some along to Sara's mom. Amaranth self-seeds as well as nicotiana and hollyhocks are included. Canna lilies and pale pink poppies rise tall amongst the profusion of lower flowers.
A Virginia creeper eagleton vines the fence and the north deck is surrounded by pots of begonia and passion flowers adding to the interest of the yard. The array of colors are amazing and delightful.
The love of plants, flowers, and gardening are apparent in our conversation with Sara. She says she likes to buy things that are cool and on sale!
