Blue Pony athletes shine in every season

28 Havre High standouts garnered All-State honors in 2020-21

After a 2019-2020 athletic year that was unceremoniously ended by the COVID-19 pandemic, Havre High athletics returned this past fall and finished up the year this past May. During that time, many Blue Ponies had excellent seasons that earned them Class A All-State honors.

In his senior season, Kellen Detrick was named the Male Athlete of the Year at Havre High. He earned the honor after making the Class A all-state team in both football and boys basketball to end his time in Havre.

Loy Waid also finished her career at Havre being named the school's Female Athlete of the Year. She earned the accolade after earning all-state honors as a member of the state-champion girls basketball team as well as a member of both the girls' relay teams in track that placed at state.

Many Pony athletes had a strong year that earned them high honors. Orion Thivierge earned all-state honors after winning the state championship in the 170-pound weight class. He also earned all-state honors for his performance in football.

Other wrestlers earned all-state honors for their performances this past season. In his final season as a wrestler, Mick Chagnon won the state championship wrestling in the 120-pound weight class. Kale VanCampen also earned all-state honors for his performance last year.

Josh Warp, a three-sport standout had a great senior season as he earned all-state honors in golf and tennis. Warp finished his tennis career by placing third at state in the doubles bracket. In the fall, Warp finished an outstanding fifth at the Class A state meet in Butte.

Other tennis players who had strong seasons to earn all-state honors include Trenton Maloughney and Josh Currie. Along with his partner Warp, Maloughney placed third in the doubles bracket at the state tournament in May. Currie also had a strong performance at the state tournament as he reached the state championship match in the singles bracket as the Ponies won the Class A boys state title.

The Ponies had many swimmers place at state to earn all-state honors. Conner McKay placed fourth in the boys 200-yard freestyle. In the boys 200-yard individual medley, Hiram Cammon placed fourth and Wyatt Hagstrom placed sixth. Hagstrom also took fourth in the boys' 100-yard backstroke. Brigham Blackwell took fourth in the boys' 50-yard butterfly and fifth in the boys' 50-yard freestyle.

Several swim relay teams also placed at state to earn all-state honors. The boy's 200-yard medley relay team that consisted of McKay, Hagstrom, Blackwell and Joey Byrd placed second at state. The boys' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Hagstrom, Cammon, Byrd and Chase Mariani placed second at state and the boys' 200-yard freestyle relay team of McKay, Blackwell, Cammon and Collin Miller took fourth at state.

The Ponies also had many athletes from their girls' teams earn all-state honors throughout the year. Sadie Filius earned all-state honors for her season in track where she excelled in the hurdles. She also earned all-state honors as a member of the state-champion girls' basketball team. Filius earned all-state honors as members of the HHS track relay teams. The 4x100 girls' relay team of Filius, Waid, Kennedy Hampton and Tamera O'Leary earned all-state honors for placing sixth at the state meet. The 4x400 girls' relay team of Waid, Filius, O'Leary and Kyanna Jarvis earned all-state honors as well for placing sixth at state.

Yelena Miller earned all-state honors as both a member of the girls basketball team and the volleyball team. Talia Ralph also earned all-state honors for volleyball this past season.

In their final season on the softball team, Quinn McDonald, Lexi Haney and Sam Lovenguth earned all-state honors for their performance this season. Underclassman Avery Carlson was also named to the all-state team in softball.

Many female swimmers earned all-state honors. Kobi Burchard earned all-state honors for placing third in the girls' 200-yard intermediate medley and fourth in the girls' 100-yard freestyle. Aliviah Pratt took third in the girls' 100-yard backstroke and Kyla Burchard placed fourth in the girls' 200-yard intermediate medley. Morgan Flammond placed fifth in the girls' 100-yard freestyle and sixth in the girls' 50-yard freestyle. Megan Miller placed sixth in both the girls' 100-yard butterfly and girls' 100-yard backstroke.

The girls swim relay team members also earned all-state honors after placing at state. The girls' 400-yard freestyle relay team that consisted of Miller, Flammond, Kobi Burchard and Kyla Burchard took second at state to earn all-state honors. The girls' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Flammond, Kobi Burchard, Kyla Burchard and Blakelee Lines finished fourth at state. The girls' 200-yard medley relay team of Miller, Lines, Pratt and Nina Flores.

With two state championships this year, Havre also finished among the top Class A schools in the annual All Sports Trophy race.
