Multiple organizations for military veterans held their annual service outside the Hill County Courthouse Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
The service, led by speaker Josh Gomez of the American Legion Riders, began with a three-volley salute by the Veteran Honor Guard and the playing of taps in honor of fallen military members. An invocation and the playing of the national anthem followed.
A local Scout troop then hoisted an American flag prior to Gomez reading a list of deceased veterans from 2020 and 2021.
Members of American Legion Post 11 and its auxiliary, the American Legion Riders Post 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 497, the VFW Post 497 Auxiliary, and the Havre Elks Lodge Post 1201 then laid wreaths at the memorial. A benediction followed to conclude the service.
The Elks Lodge on Second Street also held a ceremony. This ceremony included a posting of colors by the Honor Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance, Memorial Day and POW-MIA speeches and an Elks flag ceremony followed by a free-will offering lunch. The Honor Guard also went to Highland Cemetery for another 21-gun salute.
Prior to the Memorial Day service, the Legion Riders sponsored a fundraiser at Vizsla Brewing Company 4-8 p.m. for veteran suicide prevention Friday. The event also had live music.
"22 A Day" veterans suicide awareness patches, T-shirts and decals were sold along with raffle tickets. Raffle prizes included a $300 gift certificate for Bear Paw Meats, a $200 gift certificate for Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods and a gas gift certificate.
The Legion Riders also sponsored a poker run starting at 9 a.m. at the former IGA parking lot on First Street West. The route spanned from Havre to Chester to Fort Benton and back to Havre, including five stops. The route ended at Vizsla Brewing.
VFW Post 497 placed flags at the grave sites of veterans at Highland Cemetery Sunday.
