The Havre High track and field teams returned to postseason competition for the first time in two years when they competed at the Eastern A Divisional meet in Glendive Friday and Saturday. In their return to the postseason, the Havre girls team finished in fourth place and the Havre boys team took seventh.
“We had a real good showing at the divisional meet,” said HHS head coach Ryan Gatch “A lot of fantastic races, a really exciting meet, so it was a great experience for our student-athletes.”
The Havre girls team placed fourth at the meet with 48 points. Laurel won the girls meet with 196 points. The Havre boys team took seventh in their meet with 27 points. Hardin took first in the boys’ meet with 144 points. In his first postseason coaching the track team, Gatch was satisfied with how they performed.
“They exceeded our expectations. They did a fantastic job,” Gatch said. “We had a lot of great performances from a lot of people that normally we don’t talk about so it was fun being able to watch them smile and hit their best records as they’re winding up their year.”
Nolan Lotton won the only divisional title for the Blue Ponies at the meet as he won the 400-meter sprint with a time of 51.71 seconds. He also took second in the 200 with a time of 22.37 seconds and fourth in the 100 with a finish of 11.20 seconds.
“He put it all on the line and had a great meet and in all five events he competed real well and had great finishes in all of his events,” Gatch said.
Lotton was not the only member of the boys team to place high at the meet. Dylan Young’s best finish came in the 800 where he placed sixth with a time of 2:06.21. The boys 1,600 relay team took fourth in their event with a time of 3:41.96.
Most of the Ponies’ best finishes came from their girls team. Despite a nagging leg injury, Sadie Filius finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.22 seconds. She also placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15-09.25 and she finished sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:04.23.
Emma Gillen also had success in the hurdles as she placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.62 seconds and earned a sixth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.74 seconds. Kyanna Jarvis had a successful meet with a third-place finish in the high jump with a distance of 4-08.00 and a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.82 seconds.
Loy Waid started her final postseason strong with a fourth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 1:02.68. She had even more success in the sprints with a fifth-place finish in the 100 with a time of 13.44 seconds and a sixth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 27.94 seconds. Emilee Chambliss set a personal record this year in the discus with a distance of 106-09.25 to place sixth.
The girls relay teams continued to perform well to begin the postseason. The 400 relay team took second with a time of 51.97 seconds and the 1,600 relay team placed third with a time of 4:24.80.
All the athletes, as well as any other Ponies who finished in the top 10 of their events qualified for the state meet this weekend in Laurel. As the Ponies look ahead to the final meet of their season, Gatch believes the divisional meet taught his team how to overcome adversity in the postseason.
“What we’re going to take away from it is that no matter what the tournament field looks like, the weather looks like, you always have a chance to compete,” Gatch said. “They went out and competed real well so I think they’ll have the eye of the tiger when we go out and compete down in Laurel next weekend at the state meet.”
The Ponies will finish their season with the state meet in Laurel this Friday and Saturday.
