The Havre High track and field teams had one more chance to show what they are capable of when they finished their regular season at the Eastern A Twilight meet in Sidney Friday.
With the postseason beginning this week, the Blue Ponies finished their season with the girls team finishing second and the boys team taking fifth.
“We went out and performed at a high level and set the tone early,” said HHS head coach Ryan Gatch. “A really fun group of kids to be around because they keep getting better and better. They keep working on it and keep getting better.”
The Havre boys team finished fifth out of the five teams at the meet as they scored 36 points. Hardin took first with 184.25 points. Havre had more success on their girls team as they scored 112 points to tie for second with Glendive. Miles City won the girl’s meet with 133 points.
The girls team earned a high finish thanks to the performances of their athletes in the hurdles. Kyanna Jarvis won the 100-meter hurdles for the second time this season with a time of 17.23 seconds. Jarvis also did well in the high jump with a score of 4-10 to take second.
Emma Gillen earned her first win in the 300-meter hurdles Friday when she finished with a time of 51.90 seconds. Gillen placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.94 seconds and she placed fourth in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 30.24 seconds.
Kennedy Hampton also won an event for the Ponies in the long jump with a distance of 16-02.5. She placed third in the 100 with a time of 13.63 seconds.
The Ponies also had many other high finishers on their girls team. Loy Waid took second in the 200 with a time of 27.65 seconds and Tamera O’Leary finished second in the 100 with a finish of 13.62 seconds. O’Leary also took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14-06.
The girls 400 relay team also had another strong showing when they finished second behind Glendive with a time of 51.73 seconds. Even though they did not place first in the meet, the Ponies’ time automatically qualified them for state. Gatch believes that all of these strong finishes combined indicate that his top athletes will have postseason success.
“We got a lot of girls that are doing real good: Kennedy Hampton, Tamera O’Leary, Loy Waid, Sadie Filius, Kyanna Jarvis,” Gatch said. “Those jump right off the finals sheets at you with the number of many wins that they have this year and with their records getting faster and faster each race.”
Several other Ponies had solid days. Grayce Hitchcock finished tied for third in the shot put with a distance of 30-01 and Emilee Chambliss took third in the discus with a distance of 91-05. London Toldness took fourth in the 400 and Clara Laird took fourth in the javelin with a distance of 85-01. Laird also took fifth in the discus with a distance of 77-07 and Maggie Daniels finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 29-11.
Hannah Haslem took fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:09.42 and she placed sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:40.54. Clara Haslem took sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 26-07 and Amya Custer took sixth in the 200 with a time of 31.52 seconds.
While the Havre boys team did not have a strong finish Friday, they did have some individuals did perform well. Nolan Lotton continued his strong season in the sprints as he won the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.12 seconds and he won the 200 with a finish of 22.81 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:11.24.
Dylan Young had a strong finish in the 800 when he finished second with a time of 2:06.41. Gatch believes that strong finishes like this one indicate postseason success for Young.
“He’s one of our strongest competitors. Loves track and field,” Gatch said. “He’s going to do great stuff in the 100, 200 and the 400 at divisionals.”
Ciaran Courtnage took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.20 seconds and Jason Wold placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-00.
With the regular season now over, the Ponies now look ahead to the postseason beginning next week with the divisional meet in Glendive. As they head into the postseason, Gatch believes his athletes are ready for the challenge.
“We’re poised to make a good strike. Right where we want to be actually,” Gatch said. “We’re really excited about being able to go down to the divisional meet and compete against all the best teams in the Eastern.”
The HHS track and field teams will begin competing in the Eastern Divisional this Friday.
