Many Hi-Line schools gathered at Havre Middle School Wednesday to begin the track and field postseason with the District 9C boy's track meet. Despite late-season distractions for the Fort Benton senior class, they continued their dominant season with another first-place finish at the meet.
"We had a good team showing. We had a lot of personal records and some kids who normally don't place placed," Fort Benton head coach Kevin Shaw said.
Fort Benton scored 211 points to take first Wednesday thanks to many strong individual performances. William Ullery led the way for the Longhorns winning two events on the day. He first won the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.30 seconds and then took first in the 200 with a time of 23.08 seconds.
"It was a really nice day, just decided to make the most of it and run as hard as I could, and we did really good today," Ullery said.
The Longhorns had several other first-place finishers at the meet. Devin Bird won the 400 with a time of 55.18 seconds. Nick Marias finished first in the long jump with a distance of 21-02.25. Colter Ball gave Fort Benton another win when he won the javelin with a distance of 148-09.
Both Fort Benton relay teams had strong days at the meet as the 400 relay team finished first with a time of 45.2 seconds and their 1,600 relay team took first with a time of 3:39.30.
North Star took second at the meet with 88 points. While they did not win the meet, North Star head coach Brian Campbell was happy with their finish.
"That was the goal coming in because we knew that you weren't going to catch Fort Benton boys," Campbell said. "So to take second to that team, that's quite the accomplishment."
Jaden Sargent had the strongest day for the Knights winning three events. He took the 800 with a time of 2:10.92 and he won the 1,600 with a time of 5:00.80. He then finished first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:01.30.
"I definitely did a little better than I thought I would coming into today," Sargent said. "Taking home first was really big for me and it's really just been a good day."
Chinook scored 77 points to place third at the meet. Their best finish was Toby Niederegger taking first in the high jump with a height of 6-03. Both their relay teams finished second in their events.
Big Sandy took fourth with 74 points. Kade Strutz had a strong showing in the throwing events as he won the shot put with a distance of 43-01.50 and he won the discus with a distance of 134-00. Cooper Taylor also won the 300-meter hurdle with a time of 44.40 seconds.
Chester-Joplin-Inverness scored 68 points to take fifth at the meet thanks to several strong performances. Bryce Kammerzell took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.22 seconds and Kyle Harmon won the triple jump with a distance of 41-02.50. Ryder Cole also won the pole vault with a score of 10-06.
Hays-Lodge Pole finished sixth with six points and Box Elder finished seventh with two points. Turner did not have any male athletes to compete at the meet.
The postseason will continue for the 9C's top athletes when they head to the Northern C Divisional next week in Great Falls. Campbell believes that if his top athletes can have another strong showing next week, they will have earned the right to compete at state.
"If you're able to move past next week, then it's more of a privilege," Campbell said. "Now it's a reward to get it going and have fun at state."
The Northern C Divisional will be held on May 19-20 at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.
