Pastor's Corner: Mother's Day Scriptures

Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 9, 2021. I thought for this week's religious article that I would quote several Mother's Day Scriptures and make comments where appropriate:

"For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him." - 1 Samuel 1:27

In this Scripture, a formerly childless woman recalls how she cried out to the Lord to be able to have a baby. She had been barren for years, and in that culture being childless was a curse. So she prayed, and prayed hard, and God gave her a son, the Bible man we know as the prophet Samuel. Mothers, are you desperate enough for an answer from God that you would cry out to Him fervently in prayer? What a great idea!

"We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done." - Psalm 78:4

In this Scripture we are given three things that we, as parents, need to share with our children: 1) the glorious deeds of the Lord, 2) the Lord's might, and 3) the wonders that the Lord has done. These three are similar, yet different. The glorious deeds of the Lord are things that God has done that bring Him glory. Sometimes they are miracles, sometimes not. The wonders that the Lord has done are the miracles that God has worked. Telling of the Lord's might is proclaiming how strong God is! Mothers, your children need to know from you that God is strong, and that He performs miracles and deeds that bring Him glory and bring provision and encouragement to us.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." - Proverbs 22:6

This is a Scripture that so many mothers hold onto, oftentimes because their adult children seemed to have lost their way and have drifted away from the Lord. This Scripture reminds us, as parents, that what we teach our children when they are in our homes as kids - that positive, Scriptural teaching will yield positive, Scriptural effects as they move into adulthood. What is hard for us is that it sometimes takes a while ...

"In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned." - Titus 2:7-8

In this Scripture, Pastor Titus is speaking to mothers in his congregation, giving them instruction as to what they are to teach by example to their children. Do our children need to be people of integrity, truthful and honorable? Absolutely! Is there a seriousness that is needed in our children's speech? Certainly - but not every single word every single day. What about a soundness of speech in our children? Do they need their speech to be founded on the Bible, God's Word? Do they need for their speech to be founded on their relationship with God? Yes! Yes! Yes!

Mothers, as you are celebrated this Sunday with gifts, dining out, and encouraging words from your children, may I encourage you to remain vigilant in training up your children to love the Lord God, and to base their life decisions on the writings in His Book, The Bible! Amen!
