The Havre High tennis teams have played in a lot of cold weather this season. This past weekend in Glendive, it was anything but cold outside.
Havre headed east to the Elks Invitational Friday and Saturday where the Blue Ponies played six duals in two days of unseasonably hot weather, and while it was tough on his teams, it was a test HHS head coach George Ferguson said his Ponies needed.
“Very proud of our kids for how they handled the conditions,” Ferguson said. “We went from freezing our butts off at practice on Monday to playing a ton of matches in hot weather this weekend. It was really tough. It took its toll for sure, but I believe it is just another element that helped our teams get better. And we did get better, I feel. Our kids battled hard for two days. They did a great job.”
The Havre boys beat Miles City, Billings Central and Glendive Friday, while the Ponies tied Hardin once, beat Lewsitown and fell to the Bulldogs in a rematch to end the weekend.
Josh Currie, Josh Warp and Trenton Maloughney led Havre in victories over the six matches, but Ferguson said there were plenty of contributors to Havre’s success.
“It was kind of a tale of two different weekends for our boys,” Ferguson said. “I don’t think we played our best tennis, but at the same time, we won a ton of matches against good Class A competition. We had guys like Collin Miller, Conner McKay, Jared Rosgaard, Carter Spangler and Kendall Pleninger stepping up and winning key matches for us, and those are all really first-year players. So while we didn’t have our A-Game at times this weekend, and we’re still progressing as a young team, we still performed really well, and in adverse conditions. So that says a lot about the potential of this boys team.”
The Blue Pony girls are also a young team this season, even younger than the boys, but, Ferguson said, the girls turned a big corner in Glendive. While Havre lost to Hardin twice, as well as Glendive, Central and Miles City, the Ponies did beat rival Lewistown 4-2. And young players like Rayna Johnson, Kaylee Torgerson, Chloe Bricker and Courtney Burchard all won key matches, as did veteran leaders Grace Crantz and Talia Ralph.
“Really excited about the way our girls played,” Ferguson said. “Being so new, they’ve really taken their lumps at times this season. But it’s starting to pay off now. They’re winning more matches, and even the ones we don’t win, those matches are getting tighter, and we’re closing the gap on a lot of our opponents. So that means the girls are starting to really see their hard work pay off, and that’s really fun to watch.”
With Glendive over, Havre will head to the Mayfair Invitational Friday and Saturday in Billings, where the Ponies will play the same format as they continue to prepare for the Northeast A Divisional, which is now just two weeks away.
“It was a challenging, but fun weekend,” Ferguson said. “I thought our kids showed a lot of toughness. I thought everybody played great at times. We just need to keep getting consistent, keep moving forward, as we want to be peaking here in the next couple weeks.”
