North Star's Kenidee Wolery shining on the track before she starts a college hoops career at Rocky Mountain
North Star senior Kenidee Wolery had several options for college. It came down to several schools offering her a chance to play volleyball and Rocky Mountain College offering her a chance to play basketball. After visiting the campus and meeting the basketball team, she decided to sign with Rocky Mountain in order to continue playing basketball.
"I really liked the community when I went down there and practiced with them," Wolery said. "The girls were really accepting of me and it was a really cool atmosphere. I like Wes Keller and his intensity. I liked the program and the work ethic so it was a good fit."
While she loves volleyball, Wolery decided on basketball because she finds it a bit more intense. She found the recruitment process easy as it only took a couple of weeks from reaching out to the program to signing a letter of intent with them.
At Rocky Mountain, she has decided to major in biology before heading to PA school to become a physician assistant. She wants to eventually go into health care, but if she changes her mind, she does not believe switching out of biology and PA school will be too difficult.
Wolery heads to Rocky Mountain after a successful career at North Star. She capped off her career by helping lead the Knights to their first District 9C tournament championship in school history. In the championship game against Fort Benton, she led the team with 20 points.
"Really cool thing to be a part of because we had never done it and we made school history," Wolery said. "It was nice to end on something like that for a career."
Wolery has been playing basketball since the third grade. She was surrounded by the sport and competed in it every chance she got, which only grew her love for the game. In high school, she played volleyball, basketball and track and field. She is currently competing in track and field in her final year as a Knight after missing last year.
"It's nice to be back, It was disappointing to miss a season," Wolery said. "It feels really good to be back and to be back in such a normal setting like we are."
Wolery believes that her experience at North Star has prepared her for Rocky Mountain. At North Star, she competed in many close and important games. She also believes that the losses she suffered at North Star helped build the resiliency she needs to compete at a high level.
"It made me realize that you're not always going to win everything and not everything's going to be super easy," Wolery said. "We had a really good work ethic on our teams so I think that really helps and carries over."
Before she moves on to college ball, the Havre Daily News got to ask her five questions at the Cal Wearley Memorial track meet Tuesday.
HDN: Any favorite basketball memories?
Wolery: "There's definitely a lot of favorite times. I think a lot of them probably the bus rides to games were always fun. The bus rides after a big win. There were a lot of ups and downs but I think my favorite is probably when we beat Turner two years ago in Gildford by 10 to put us in the second seed and it was a huge game and we just couldn't miss anything. So that was probably one of my favorite highlights, too."
HDN: How did you manage being a three-sport athlete?
Wolery: "Prioritizing whatever I did, what I needed to do and it pretty much was school and academics for most of it. I wouldn't take it back. I loved every minute of all three of them."
HDN: Do you have any hobbies?
Wolery: "I play a lot of piano. Played for 10 years and I do a lot of skiing when I can, when I'm not playing basketball. I always had a knack for music, always interested in it so my parents put me through lessons locally, and I've loved it ever since."
HDN: Do you have a favorite genre of music or artist?
Wolery: "I'm kind of a mix. It depends on my day. If I want to listen to Machine Gun Kelly, I will but if I want to listen to Luke Combs, anywhere from that range. I'm kind of all over the spectrum."
HDN: What do you look forward to about college other than basketball?
Wolery: "I look forward to meeting people and networking and the bigger aspect because I go to a small school so making new friendships there."
